View Full Version : The AnD3rew Build Up

AnD3rew

It begins. Have my Rhino platform with Foxwing and shovel holder. Also have a spare wheel strap and gas bottle strap and half size luggage bag for it.

Next step is long ranger tank, rear wheel carrier, cargo barrier, Mitch hitch and Llams Llams going in next week and hopefully ARB bar and Champion winch a couple of weeks after that.

Does anyone else have a foxwing?

I am considering taking the brackets off and turning them upside down to see if I can make it sit down lower. But
a) don't knowing the brackets are reversible and
b) if it will clear the doors and
c). If that will make it too low when it is extended.

Yeah looks almost orphaned sticking up there!
As you say just need to check that rear door but I'm sure it will foul if you move the awning down.

Easily fixed....:p
Make everyone get in/out on the drivers side[thumbsupbig]

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Seriously tho', you could make your own brackets so they sit at the height you want to clear the doors.
From the photo, it looks like it is sitting too far back?
Should be flush with the tail gate.

Cheers.

The photo makes it look further back than it is, but it's easily adjustable..

Very excited, just got the D3 back from from 4 days of fitting, now have 103lt Long Ranger Auxilliary tank, rear wheel carrier, safari snorkel, cargo barrier, Mitch hitch and Llams.

All looks awesome and very neatly done. Will post some pics tomorrow.

Only slight downer is that I no longer have reversing sensors. They said they can get them to work with the Mitch hitch, or with the rear wheel carrier but trying to get the to work with both is just too hard.:(
Might need to investigate reversing camera options.

Next stage is hopefully in the next two weeks, just waiting for the ARB bar to arrive which will then go on with a Champion winch and plasma rope, as well as the GME UHF, the Traxide dual battery kit with Optima yellow top and rear plugs and Anderson plug. As well as a Tekonsha brake controller and a GOE compressor plate (if Gordon gets around to sending it to me:angel:)

True, I have actually suggested to OzTent that they make a mounting bracket that hinges backwards so it sits down flat on the rack when not in use and the locks up when you want to use it. Either that or that has a sliding bracket that drops down when not in use and then slides up when you want to deploy it. Will be interested to see if they do anything with this.

One thing I did notice with the aux tank full is that it does handle a bit differently and feels a little light in the front, afew bumps in the road which would not normally unsettle it caused the traction control to get all excited.

Hopefully the front bar when fitted might balance it back out a bit.

Couple of pics of my foxwing from last weekend.Hope they help.We had two inches of rain one morning during a storm, and it was great. Some water does splash off the roof of the car though, but not a real problem,we just move stuff around & head for the tent:)

The tank looks big, but Long Ranger claim it actually gives you slightly better departure and clearance than when the spare is there in the original configuration

Looks great Andrew. Once you get the front bar on (next week?) there'll be bugger all left for you to do except a few small things like the rear ladder.

You'll probably go in to upgrade withdrawal!

Amazing how you can keep finding stuff:angel:

Thought about a ladder, but I'm pretty heavy and not sure if its up to it, I'm thinking I can just use the rear wheel to climb up on top if I need to, can also use Llams to drop lower than access height which helps with accessing the roof.

Gday AnD3rew, looking real good mate, don't worry about the long range tank I haven't marked mine yet even after doing some rock ledges during the week (admittedly the towbar helps prevent any damage lol) I'm looking at doing my cargo barrier next as I'm going to have a go at the drawers as per Rich's posts is that the autosafe one you have put in and how do you find it?

AnD3rew,

Very nice.

What bar are you putting on ? winch as well ?

You might also want to consider rock sliders/sill protectors for that last bit of added comfort when off road.

I like the foxwing and am very close to making the decision to purchase one for myself for Christmas, similar to you I have an Oztent and with the foxwing seems I could be could be set up and enjoying an ale in 10min!!

Is that extra low (button pressed after selecting low) in access mode or just low in access mode? It doesn't look low enough for extra low with access mode.

I was wondering that myself. It is switch moved to green position and then access height selected. Greg at Cremorne didn't fit the red switch, he said it was only for D4, should it be fitted for my D3?

Yes it is Autosafe, seems ok, you lose the set of tie down points closest to the seats which is where the bottom of the barrier bolts in. The top come from two metal strips which run from under the plastic trim directly inside the top of the rear door. I haven't tried to take it out yet, but it looks pretty simple 4 screws to undo which leave the attachment tabs in the car.

I'd overlooked that its a D3 but it does work for the very last ones. Anyway, you'll need to access the button to get off-road height if an ABS fault occurs which causes only safe/access height.

Traxide USI 160 Dual Battery kit with rear plugs and Anderson Plug.

Tekonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller

Special mode switch installed for Llams

GME TX3540 80Ch UHF

General Grabber AT's, wanted AT2's to match spares, but not available for months. Have to say only short bitumen trip on the so far, but they felt great and very quiet.

Very happy, will post some pics this weekend. Now just hoping my ARB bar will finally be delivered early next week so I can get it installed with my Champion/Warrior winch next week.

Very nice Andrew, you've some serious dollars invested there!

Be careful if heading over rough terrain that you don't get too much damage to the steps. I have read that they can prevent the doors from opening:

Yes more bucks than I want to add up, but my lease was up and I had a choice to either upgrade to a D4 without any accessories, or spend the money putting the accessories on my D3. Since it had been such a good vehicle I chose the latter.

Thanks for the link on the steps. I think you have persuaded my that when the finances have recovered a bit I will take the side steps off and sell them and then buy some rock sliders.

AnD3rew,

I purchased a set from Brad (Disco3QLD) on this site about a year ago and they were very reasonably priced, look great on and whilst I have not yet needed to rely on them during my trips they appear sturdy and well up to the job.

I went the narrow set, however if I purchased again I would probably get the wide set as they provide a bit of a step and would offer greater protection to the lower door panels if required.

Again you vehicle looks great.

Andrew,
Be interested to see if your Warrior winch fits with ARB bar. Peninsula Rangie tried to fit one to my Opposite Lock bar but it just wouldn't fit.
Looking for something else now..Damien there suggested a Superwinch.

I'll be watching to see what happens with yours.

AnD3rew

Well I have it and it is complete (almost). It looks great and I am really happy. The Warriorwinch did fit, but the ARB bar isn't designed for the aluminum non roller fair lead plate for the synthetic rope it is designed for the roller fair leads for the wire rope so the guys at Cremorne Prestige, who have done an amazing job despite a number of challenges, had to modify the plate a bit to make it fit. But the winch itself fits fine.

The only annoying thing is that the incandescent bulbs in the accessory indicator lights overload the electronics and makes the system shut down and the indicators won't work at all, it resets when you turn the car ff and on again but then drops out. We had to disconnect them to get me going but in the new year we will have to figure out how to fix this. Anyone else had this problem? It's something I would have hoped ARB would have sorted out, they ave been making bars for D3's for a while now. Might see if I can find LED replacement bulbs for them and see if that sorts it but ARB make it a total pain to get to the bulbs, you have to remove the lower protection plates get in behind, unscrew and and remove the whole light assembly Pull it out and then remove the lens cover to get to the lights.

Ran out of time to take and post pictures but will see if I can take some on the road and post.

When my ARB bar was fitted by Ritters, they installed relays between the ARB globes and the D3 indicators. LED bulbs might also fix the problem.

Had a great day on some back roads through state forest and cooloola national park and Noosa North shore. The HEMA maps on n the IPad were awesome never leading us astray on a bunch of rarely used forestry tracks some nice driving with a few nice washouts a little mud and sandy patches.

Tyres down to 20 PSI on the soft stuff, sand TR and DSC off and never looked close to needing winch, snatch straps or maxtraxx. Llams was awesome in this stuff.

Fowing was exceptional on the beach for the family while doing a bit of fishing and cold drinks from the Busman fridge.

Aired up again in a jiffy with the ARB compressor plugged into the rear Anderson plug from the Traxide kit.

Was even glad of the ARB bar when a couple of Roos hopped in front of me on the way home from dinner at the Boreen point pub, fortunately no contact, but nice to know its there.

Ive ordered a set of GOE sliders, I did prefer the look of Brads sliders, however I was concerned with weight. Bull bar, rear bar and long range tank, add on the camper and it could be getting up there.
Gordon did say when I spoke to him that you could have larger stand off bars like the ones on his Rangie, however they would impede on ground clearance a bit.
Also read the posts regarding steel verses alloy, interesting.

I"ll post up some pictures when I receive them and get them fitted, hopefully in thenext couple of weeks.

gghaggis
11th January 2013, 11:37 AM
Just to clarify:

I originally designed the bars on the GOE sliders when I was competing in the D3. As such, the three main criteria were:

must not reduce ground clearance
must be light
must be strong enough to take at least half the weight of the car

This is the reason I use a smaller diameter tube. To compensate, I use a tube with thicker sidewalls. Some people don't like the look of the thinner tube - that's personal choice, but you then loose a few cm of clearance under the sills. On request, I can produce sliders with larger-diameter tubing as long as you understand the drawbacks.

Cheers,

Gordon
