Cheeping diagnosis please

Diagnosing a problem seems to me to the hardest bit.
It is a standard 2002 TD5 auto. I have a cheeping from both front wheel areas. It sounds for all the world like zebra finches (not double barred or crimson finches). The sound has been around now for over 200 kilometres. It is only audible when moving at slow speed and when there are walls beside the road to reflect the sound. With front wheels off, I can see no problems and feel no play. Jacked up and spinning wheels there is no sound. The double cardan has a bit of play and is due for overhaul but I do not think it is the cause. The power steering box has a weep but the fluid level is ok. The front diff oil is OK. The front shocks are fairly recent. The traction control works fine. Trying to bounce the car by leaning on it elicits no sound. I think it is related to a part that rotates when the car moves.
Maybe the swivel hubs/cvs need grease? Maybe the ABS has something rubbing? Any ideas that I can test/inspect/check?

Start with the DC.

Check the three bolts at the flange plate that attaches the exhaust pipes to the header pipes, located both sides of vehicle.

They're a well known and documented hiding place of the lesser-known Coventry Zebra Finch......

We're talking Td5 here - you appear to be on the V8 page?

I know a few who have had the same on a TD5.

So you've got a nyi-nyi going on?

Sounds like the double cardan joint. Play is a sure sign of impending doom.

Front tail shaft i think. Its a small sound now, it will get worse if im right. Dont know how you would confirm.

Get under and look for play in the front drive shaft?

Many thanks to everyone who replied.
I have replaced the DC universals and pumped the front universal (it was a greasable one) - damned coventry finches are still there.
Brake pads are fine. How might I check the brake calipers? (they are not loose).
Does the transfer case have a chain in it? I am beginning to think there is a chattering coming from around there but the TD5 is so noisy in a car port that it is hard to tell!

No chain mate sorry. Maybe dry worn rubber bushes in the front end??

Chirp chirp - Cardon Joint! Normally when slow under load or starting up a hill. Boat ramp is excellent; or while driving in a lane adjacent to a centre concrete barrier with window down.

You should be able to see the extruding metal with a torch. Get the shaft out ASAP. If it fails, may take out the GB and the floor.

Didn't he already say he rebuilt the DC joint .....I think he wants another possible cause. Can I throw in hand brake rattle . Try it with handbrake on..

Take your drive belt off, check ALL bearings in the drive train.Bob
