Hi all does anyone have fitting instructions for a Hayman Reece towbar on D2 Disco. I need to fit it asap but the original LR is a lot different to the HR, the HR has extra bolts on the side of the tube which lines up with holes on the car but they seem to be too small. Also I have the bolts, little square plates etc but have no idea what goes where as I never saw it on other vehicle. Would anyone have fitting instructions as I googled it but did'nt come up with what I need.
Thanks
Steve

why do you want a HR setup?
would there be legal issues about fitting a different setup?

If you get stuck give me a yell, I may be able to muddle through it with you.

HR are desired using level riders on heavier trailers.
The std L/R ones arn't suitable.
The H/R is built to fitt so I can't see a legal issue.

Hi Pedro it is a much better, stronger towbar. There should'nt be legal issues as it is purpose made by HR for a discovery 2, even has it written on the id plate. Same rating too 3500kg and 250kg ball weight.
Thanks Steve

Gday we replaced the LR bar with the HR one, and didnt have any fitting instructions, from memory i had to drill 2 13mm holes after marking them, the bolts and nuts are bloody tight to do up so be prepared to put a bit of effort into doing them up.
Pedro we replaced ours because the LR bar is not tested for compliance with the HR WDH

The holes as best as I can figure are there already but I think are too small (if I'm right).
Yeah I reckon it seems a better towbar in general :)

Yeah thats rite, i think it was 13mm or 20mm That long ago mate i can not remember LOL we did a lot of k's towning the van with the LR bar when we had the air suspension but when we ditched the airbags and went coils we had to use the WDH for the ride. LR would not suport the use of the HR WDH with their bar and also insurance check found if we used the HR WDH in the LR bar we would not be covered.

Surprises me a little they would'nt cover it. I did an extensive ringaround to anyone LR related that would talk to me:eek: regarding this and got very varying answers on WDH with LR bar and sls. The HR hitch thingy, you know the bit that slides into the towbar is very sloppy fit in the factory LR towbar and I would not tow it far like this as it has massive amounts of movement. I put the 2 HR bits together and a snug perfect fit.

We spoke to LR directly in regard to the HR WDH and they strictly told me not to use it with the LR bar as the design of their bar was not tested for the upward forces that would be put on it from the WDH thus using a part not tested and recomended for use on the vehicle would void insurance, especially using a WDH with SLS could be dangerous as when weight taken off the suspension fooled suspension into beeing at correct or over height and did not inflate bags

No worries so many varied opinions on this was almost different to every expert I spoke to, insurance minefield I think.:(

mate mine field is a great term for it and didnt we have fun finding all this out when we got the D2 back in 03, i even had a hugh run in with a writer from a caravan mag over telling people to use the WDH on the Discos with SLS even LR got into it with the mag and he ended up writing for another mag not long after

Yeah gee a mag should do their homework on any issue before going to print I'm thinking. I don't think I would like to have to advise on such a matter.
Cheers mate

All,
I have just purchased LR part no RAA527 which is a heavy duty WDH kit for my TD5 with sls after extensive research myself and my own LR guys confirming from LR Aust that this kit can be used with sls. It cost me $950 and comes with everything you need. The big thing is that it is a LR part no and therefore wont void insurance.

Very interesting, i wonder when that device was developed as LR did not have anything when we purchased the car in 03, pictures would be good if you could so can see the difference between the LR & HR

These pics of the stock D2 bar were appropriated from a current ebay listing.

Mine had a HR bar on it when I bought it. It's a bit of a shock seeing what a flimsy bit of junk the stock bar is.

If its used with sls how do you know how tight to have the chains? As far as I'm aware there would be a very fine line to adjusting the tension on the chains would'nt there?. Lift it too far with chain tension and would'nt the system start dumping air to try and get it down to level?. Not far enough and the tension bars/chains would not do their job and almost be loose would'nt they?. This is the main reason I converted to coils as I wanted to use my HR WDH setup and I thought there were too many variables involved with use of sls system.
I'm certainly NOT critisising here, just curious as to how they would go with sls

I have replied to your Private Message. Most dealers will probably tell you that you can't use a WDH on a Disco or on a Disco with SLS. The handbook says that you can't use a WDH on the 'standard' towbar and refers to the RAA527. I believe that there is a lot of confusion out there because dealers weren't aware of the availability of the RAA527 kit and the mistaken belief about WDH and SLS but the end result is that you can use a WDH with the Disco as long as you use the 'heavy duty' towbar that comes with the RAA527 kit and it is Ok to use and you can use it on one with SLS. I have a copy of the technical advice from LR Tech (thanks to Sneigy who was a great help sorting this out) that confirms that you can use the RAA527 with SLS.
cheers
