I'm aware of a number of prior threads on this subject, but was wondering if due to marvels of modern technology, there is yet any easy way for we poor microsoft people to reduce digital camera photos to useable pixels for posting without having to use other systems - so as a numpty/limited IT savvy participant I can post pics of wee beastie and add an avatar to my signature etc!
Here's hoping. Gavin
EDIT - I'm running Windows 7 Professional

If you use Picasa to manage your pix then you can upload to Picasa Web Albums in a size suitable for this site, e.g., 800 pixels wide. Alternatively, use Picasa to export the image to a folder on the PC. then you use the AULRO Manage Attachments to upload the pic to AULRO.

faststone image viewer is a free program that is exceedingly simple to use for resizing, also rotating, cropping, colour and hue and brightness adjustment etc

Another vote for Faststone, it's on all my windoze computers. Works well for what I need.

Personally, I load photos to photobucket then link them here in my post. Couldn't be simpler.
photobucket even give you a link with the [IMG] tags...
That won't help your avatar pic, but I have blocked all sigs and avatar pics anyway - as I found they were becoming annoying.

Again I use Photobucket for most of my pics but if I use the Aulro system to get thumbnails at the bottom of a post I find AULRO automatically reduces pics to the correct size.

Another photobucket user... Saves manual cut and paste since clicking on the right code link already copies to the clipboard.

I'm a Photobucket user as well but I use AC/DC to resize photos.
On my work PC (Windows 7) if I click on a picture file and 'open with' Office 2010 I can also resize it and save it.

Thanks all. Although I have Windows 7 Professional, I only have Office 2007.
Trying the AULRO version first up - not sure if it will work on OS later than W 2000.
Photobucket sounds a bit hi tech for me!
