View Full Version : Disco 4 Tyres

Hi there
I'm new to the forum, but not to Land Rovers. We bought our first in 72 (1960 Series II hardtop, image attached) and since then have owned a Series II LWB, four RRs starting with a 1974 model and a Disco 2. In amongst all that a 76 SWB soft top Toyota, a Landcruiser and a Jeep Cherokee. Clearly we have spent far too much on 4WDs! We now have a Disco 4 2.7D which is great and will do for quite a while.
However, and I know that there are various postings on similar questions on the forum, I really would appreciate your advice on tyres. Currently we have 255 60 18 Goodyear Wrangler M+S which are just about gone after 35k Kms. I would like something tougher that will do a bit of off road work as well as the bitumen and I would prefer to do without the hassle of a second set of wheels.
Any thoughts?

We just got the Cooper Zeonn LTZ yesterday. No opinion so far other than I like the looks. ;)

Don't seem to beb louder but we have not done any freeway trip yet.

The only LT's you will get in the 255/60/18 are Bridgestone somethings,Tombie on here has got them.There is a thread on them but can't seem to locate it ATM.

You can get a tougher LT but will have to go oversize

Unless you go to 17' rims,then there are many different LT types that will fit and are same or very similar size to OEM.

What difference does the extra 12mm diameter make? Does it change the drive mechanics in away? What about speedo readings?

Drives just fine.
Can't notice difference,
Speedo now 1km/h More accurate.
Was out by 5km. Now out by 4km/h

Hi Tony,

I have just bought a set of General Grabber AT tyres to replace the wranglers on my D3. I got 45k kms out of the wranglers and also wanted something a little more off road focused. Have only had them on for a couple of days so can't comment too much on performance. They certainly look the part.

Btw, I was told that Pirelli Scorpions were not available until middle of Dec and General Grabber AT2's would not be available until Jan.

The Grabber ATs were $309 per tyre from Bob Jane.

I just got the Pirelli Scorpion ATRs fitted to my D4. I also got 45k out of my Wranglers, they went down hill fast at the end!

When I first enquired about the ATRs I was told not available but on further investigation they were. Mine are on a 3.0l so are the 19' tyres though, I paid $393 a tyre.

One of my main concerns was noise levels, and I have noticed no difference at all from the Wranglers, I do hope these wear a bit better. I'm used to getting 85-95k out of my michelins on the D2.

Hi all,

I fitted a set of General Grabbers this year prior to a Kimberley trip in June. Our trip included the Tanami and the Gibb River Road. I've had no problems at all with them (in fact they are still going strong) From memory I think they were about $300.00 each fitted.

They come highly recommended by me:)

Fitted Copper AT3 255/70/17 LT around 10000k ago and used them extensively touring on rough roads and offroad and I'm very happy with them so far

just put these boots on. conti cross contact at 255/60/18

driven them all the way from the tyre garage - very happy so far :p

Have some 265/70/17 Cooper LTZ Tyres on EBay at the moment.... :)
