View Full Version : Discovery 3 Key remote
Scary
3rd December 2012, 03:32 PM
Hi Guys,
I did a search and didn't find anything. One of our remotes for the D3 is playing up.
As I understand it the key fob with the remote control is a rechargeable battery and cannot be replaced.
Is this correct?
One of ours is playing up and only works intermittantly. Is there a fix for it ro do I need to go via Landrover and buy a new one?
Thanks

I believe during certain services they actually replace the rechargeable battery. Read it somewhere but can't find it. Always the way. Shouldn't need a whole new key.

I have read on Disco3.co.uk someone pried theirs apart and unsoldered the old battery and resoldered a replacement chargeable battery. The case then needs to be reglued together.
I have not tried this so please let us know.
I also have one key where the battery is dead.

I have been told by a reliable source that the key charges while in the ignition so you should use both keys at different times to maintain them in good order. Hope this helps.

My one that died was the one I used every day. The spare that was in the cupboard and unused for 4 years worked fine.
You are right though they do charge when in use.

I have recently replaced the battery in my spare, bought a new empty FOB off Ebay, a new battery from the UK, all up cost around $25. Prised open the old FOB, replaced the battery (fiddly) and put the new case together with Superglue (fiddley as well). Had to use my Faultmate to have the vehicle relearn the key and all is well.

Same with us the everyday key is the one that died and the spare works faultlessly

Here is a link to tear apart instructions re the key fob. It is not easy, but the incentive is high. It may be that just the solder joint of the battery to the circuit board has cracked - seems common. In other words, perhaps re solder the tab to the circuit board and then tie the key fob, (elastic bands), to the working key fob for a couple of days of driving and all may be OK again.
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - both key fobs not working - help (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic39609.html?highlight=%2Bkey+%2Bfob)

The rechargeable vanadium pentoxide lithium battery that you purchase is Panasonic 3 volt VL2330 1HFE but the number may now be changed to VL 2330 HFN. The 1HFE refers to the style of tabs that are soldered on and that there is an insulation wrap around the perimeter of the 23mm diameter coin type battery. You will probably have some difficulty actually getting the battery. The best source in the USA is Digi-Key and they will sell one or two and mail them to you at a fair price.

VL-2330/HFN Panasonic - BSG | P085-ND | DigiKey (http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll'vendor=0&keywords=VL-2330%2FHFN)

If you just replace the battery, the existing programming should be OK. It is when a new key fob from Solihull shows up that reprogramming of all your keys is required.

The radio frequency that the key fobs transmit/receive on are different in Australia from North America, (315 MHz), however the "coin" battery within that powers the circuit boards is the same regardless.

Note my previous comment that it may not be the battery but instead the solder connection of the battery tab to the circuit board. The fact your key fob works one day but not the next suggests a cracked solder joint.

You still have to open the case up but all you may have to do is put some heat on the existing solder joint at the tab.

Thanks will give that a go is just that key starts working again if I putt it in ignition for a while so I think battery just hold charge for a day or so

I've replaced the key fob cover (pita to open - hint I used a dremel to cut it open ... Carefully) and had a new fob from eBay. I got a replacement battery from battery world (order in $9 got it in a couple of days). Easy solder - my problem was a cracked soldered battery joint per bbyers comment but i figured id change the battery while it was open. All good now !

I purchased this for a friend from eBay seller "car remote store". Bought two for him and her.
Full internal replacement, just a touch hard to glue and join but worked well.

I purchased my spare battery from Jaycar electronics but turned out not to be the battery, there is a piece of sponge rubber at the back of the circuit board which over time has been compressed with continuous pushing of the buttons just put a bit more packing behind it and now works great

Hi
I purchased on of the silicon button replacement strips from the site you quote to repair my damaged fob.
Installed easily enough following their instructions. Has worked fine for last 6 months, only slight drawback is the lack of icons showing which button is which.
Cheers

I have just had both key fobs fail on the same day. I was thinking receiver but then thought I will have a look at the key fobs first. I opened the first key fob and found the solder links and battery had seperated. Not a dry joint but broken. I De soldered the battery terminal and made up a new link. Resoldered the battery to the pcb and if worked fine. 2nd key fob which was working fine until today had the same problem. It was a very intermittent fault. So I repaired it exactly the same. 2 remotes now working no loss of pairing info and no cost. I can recommend try this repair first.

Hi all,
For those with an extended warranty of some sort don't forget it may be worth trying to get faulty keys replaced under a claim.
To my great surprise I successfully got 2 LR keys replaced and coded (paying my excess) from one of the after market warranty companies earlier this year. As you may know getting anything out of them is a miracle and I really didn't expect this to be covered. But then it is an integral part of the car and not a service item....

I replaced the battery in one of my key fobs a while back. Sourced the battery from RS Australia (just over $11 and free postage);
Buy Coin Button Rechargeable Batteries Panasonic 3V, VL2330 Lithium Vanadium Pentoxide Rechargeable Coin Cell Battery, PCB Pin Terminal, 50mAh Panasonic VL-2330/HFN online from RS for next day delivery. (http://au.rs-online.com/web/p/products/0407899/)
All went well. It was a little fiddly to do, but managed it fine. I followed instructions I found on the net. (see two documents attached)
It did not need reprogramming after changing the battery.

Just ordered case and battery for my second remote. Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread I have decided to give it a go. If it works well I will order another case for my main remote which is working fine but the case is wearing out. Will let you know how it goes.
Case was $18 and the battery was $15 both from Australian eBay suppliers.

I've been very fortunate with D3 keys, I keep losing them before the battery goes:censored:....LOL. I have managed to keep one long enough to wear the fob cover out then the key failed...... Found this on ebay.

We'll just finished doing one when I realised I had done the wrong one:censored::censored::censored: what a dope. Pretty lucky it all worked because otherwise I would have been stuck with no working keys.
The upside is I was planning to do that one anyway once I had confirmed with the dud key that I could do it. The downside is that I still have one working key and one dud key:censored:
Never mind I have ordered the next fob case and battery and will do it again next weekend.
It is definitely fiddly, make sure you have a fine tip for your soldering iron, I didn't but filed mine down and it worked ok. It is a bugger getting the old case apart and the new cases definitely aren't of the same quality materials as the old one, but for now all looks good and works well.

Just did the second key which hasn't been working for about a year and it was an instant cure, no worries at all. Definitely easier the second key once you have worked out all the fiddly bits.
Learned the hard way that you need to make sure you put enough super glue on as the first key I did fell apart a few days after I finished it, luckily I didn't lose any bits and was able to just out it back together and reglue it.
