G'day guys, has anyone done any of the tracks around sheepyard flats recently. I am thinking of heading up there soon and haven't been up there for a few years. Just wanting to know what condition the tracks are in.

Hi mate. I went to sheepyard flat over the cup weekend. Started at sheepyard went up to bluff hut and lovicks hut then turned around and went back down to the track junction and turned right (north) stayed the night at the campground on the river down on the flats. Next day went to bindaree falls and then up a very steep rough track that brought you out at Craig's hut. Then went pineapple flats to wild horse gap trk.

The roads to from mansfeild to sheepyard flat were very dusty but well graded apart from the odd corrugation. The tracks up to lovicks were pretty easy, with only 1 or 2 small sections requiring a bit more thought on wheel placement.

Steep sections down to the flats were fine. River crossings were 30 cm ish and easy. Road to bindaree falls was being re graded.- saw a commadore there! The ascent to Craig's hut was rocky, loose in places and steep but nothing too challenging. The rest was easy - more steep lose rocky ascents and descents at wild horse though.

The worst bit was the dust. Had a snorkel - wish I had a precleaner!

Thanks Mattyg, sounds good. I will probably go on most of those tracks. The rocky track up to craigs hut may be clear hills track. You didn't go up 16 mile jeep track by any chance did you?

I was around there on cup weekend too, mattyg's descriptions sound spot on!
The track up to Craig's Hut (from Bindaree Rd end) is Monument Track which then joins Clear Hills, so that could be the one mattyg is describing.
I went up 16 mile jeep track from pikes flat hut area, just as it started to rain. Its a bit rutted and hadn't got too slippery, but I imagine it does, it's certainly not got the loose, rocky surface of most of the other nearby tracks. I made it up no worries though and that's in a fairly standard disco.

Cheers,
Dan

Thanks Dan, my disco is pretty much standard as well. It will be good to get up there again.

Yeah Dan it was monument track we took up to Craig's hut. And that campsite was on 16mile jeep track on the how qua river.

It's one of my favorite places up there, water levels are low at the moment and mattyg's description is spot on, if you are in a standard rig you will be able to do all of these tracks just be careful of the water crossing at bindaree hut there is hole on the right hand side. Make sure you check out tunnel bend while you are there.

Cheers

If you want a great drive, head up to Bluff Hut then on up to Lovicks, then continue on to Howitts Hut, and if you want after Howitts come back and turn right onto Zeka Spur and go down to Wonnangatta homestead, then back to Sheepyards the way you came, that should keep you busy for the day and you'll love the views, especially from Picture Point, just past Lovicks.

Baz.
