Ok, I've read the online info from NSW RMS but there are still a couple of matters that I'm not clear on.
I had been earlier advised that a HCRS rego'd vehicle cannot legally tow a trailer but I cannot find a reference to this on the website.
So I would appreciate the correct info in respect of the following -
(a) can a HCRS vehicle legally tow a full rego trailer (eg. S2a + modern trailer) ?
(b) can a HCRS rego be obtained for a >30yo trailer (eg. No 5) ?
(b) can a HCRS vehicle legally tow a HCRS rego trailer (eg. S2a + No5) ?

I'll have to look up (a) but for (b) and (b) it is yes to both, you can put a trailer that meets the requirements on the HCRS, and it can be towed by a vehicle on HCRS.
I suspect (a) is okay too, if nobody else steps up with the answer I will check a bit later.

Thanks for that Mark - (a) is important to me because I was just wondering what combination could be legally put together when I get the 2a GS on the road for historic vehicle outings.

Hi Dinty has mentioned the exclusion, but that may be a Dungog Club rule. The RMS policy doesn't specify any rules relating to trailers. However there is nothing preventing the towing of a fully registered trailer behind an HCRS vehicle.
If the club the HCRS vehicle is authorised by has rules about trailers, you need to abide by whatever rules they have. If you fail to abide by the club rules, the Club is entitled to notify the RMS that you are using the vehicle in breach of the rules/or that they are removing their authorisation of your vehicle.
ALSO, the rules relating to loads on HCRS vehicles would come into play, for example the payload of a HCRS vehicle is only 2/3 of the payload for a fully registered vehicle, so the assumption would be that the drawbar pull specifications would have to be reduced by 1/3.
You will also find that the towing of the trailer would be restricted to attending Official Club Events, where the load on the trailer is related to the event. i.e. you can't use a fully registered trailer behind a HCRS vehicle to go to the rubbish tip, pickup gear from your mates place, go shopping or even for a maintenance drive. The last item is because the trailer is not being tested and by implication can't drive a HCRS vehicle to test another fully registered vehicle. If the fully registered trailer needed to be tested it should be tested behind a fully registered vehicle.
You could however take the club tent and club BBQ to the club event in a fully registered trailer, and you could even tow your fully registered camper trailer to a club camping weekend. I also use my fully registered 2003 ex-Army PT1 1.2 Haulmark trailer behind my SIII when I attend club events.
I have my No.5 on HCRS, if you do the manufacturer of the No.5 is specified at the RMS as Australian Defence Industries (ADI).

by way of explanation I was asking from the point of view of taking camping gear etc etc to a listed event (like Corowa) - like I mentioned in post #3 ( historic vehicle outings),
(no other nefarious schemes in mind) :)

No accusations intended, but I needed to let you know that there have been blitzes by the RTA on trailers etc going to the tip. A couple of years ago there was a blitz outside a regional tip and they got at least one HCRS vehicle and numerous unroadworthy and unregistered trailers. There was also one ex Army truck on HCRS taking bush rock out of the bush. The club got audited and not long after the reduced payload rules were brought in.
As I said there are no rules about fully registered trailers behind HCRS vehicles, but the rules on the HCRS vehicle would limit the use of the trailer to activities related to the club event. Camper trailer absolutely O.K.
You could also likely get away with a trip to pick up gear for the club event but it would depend upon your club's registrar.
