Just found these on ebay, and considering my mech was telling me about doing this mod today at about $450 these sound pretty good, especially that they can be done yourself. Plug straight in basically 15 min install..
Any of you tech heads who have a better idea on this sort of stuff, could you give us a run down. Cheers.
If anyone has already purchased let us know.
I am a bit hesitant, I had them done in my Hilux and they kept blacking out, I told my mech to put the original globes back in. Note: they were probably a cheaper setup???
Here is the ebay link.

Hi Babs,
Not exactly the same thing but I installed an H1 kit into an old set of Bosch spotties I had from my old 93 defender. It is a 55w kit, cost $50 on ebay.
The good: Super bright for super cheap, low current draw, combined with an LED light bar for spread, amazing light.
The bad: So bright that white or yellow coloured road signs blind you with their reflection.
I've had my kit in for about 6 months and it's been 100% reliable. I did find that the install wasn't quite a 15min plug and play situation. Mounting the ballasts in the Puma's crowded engine bay was a pain, so I squeezed them in behind the grille in the top corners.
Here's a pic of the ballasts installed sans grille:

Hope this helps.

Not quiet HID's, but Ive just put these in the disco and they are pretty damn good. A massive improvement on the old ones!
Philips HB4 9006 +100% X-treme xtreme extreme Vision Halogen Light Bulbs Globes | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Philips-HB4-9006-100-X-treme-xtreme-extreme-Vision-Halogen-Light-Bulbs-Globes-/110974832528?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19d69d8f90&_uhb=1#ht_1925wt_1037)
I looked into HID kits and was put off by the reviews on cheaper kits. Some people have had the kits turn up and not the advertised wattage, wiring from the ballast to the globes was below the required rating etc.
But the ones you are looking at could be different. And the seller appears to stand by them.

Seeing as you're sold on HID's, and you're on the other side of the island and therefore won't be blinding me... might I suggest the 4300K as being the best of both worlds. - Better colour rendition and less glare for you as well as everyone else.
Yes, those reflective signs are a pain... especially as they're reflecting YOUR light back into YOUR eyes.
Personally, I'd prefer the "Plus 100" halogen globes if you really must have huge amounts of light... Safe ,better IMHO and legal.
Chase up the threads on HID lights. Could be illuminating.:p

Unless you have self levelling lights with washers & reflectors designed for HID there ILLEGAL

I thought of adding HIDs to my Puma but here in the UK they are illegal and you will fail the MOT now with them fitted, unless they have a washer and leveller fitted. What I did was to replace the headlamp bowls with wipac crystal bowls and fitted H4 Piaa Xtreme White Plus 4000K bulbs. The crystals came in at £20 and the bulbs at £64 a pair.
Another option which I have fitted lately are the JW Speaker LED headlamps. These require no washers or levellers and are comparable in light output to HID's. A bit pricey though but for my needs living in Scotland (long winter nights with loads of rain/snow) they are brilliant (no pun intended).

The JW speaker LED lights are made in the states but this is where I got them in the UK and the listing shows the specs.

If you are determined you want HID's may I suggest 35w with 4300k bulbs or even lower. The light output will still far exceed any standard halogen , be easier on the eyes with road signs and go a long way to avoiding blue flashing light bearing car drivers attentions! :twisted:I have them in mains on the defender with 55w 4300 in the cibies. Seem to work well and are really good offroad

I'll second the Comment about LED headlights, they are legal and will virtually last forever and use no more current than your parkers.
Since fitting mine I have had no nightvision issues, they don't reflect significantly off signs, they dont blind oncoming drivers, and I can see better in fog on both lo & hi beam , and most importantly I can actually see at night in the rain, had real issues with the wet dark roads before.
I opted for the cheaper ex USA Truck Lites but still a lot more expensive than HID's

Gary is 100% correct about being illegal without self leveling head lights. I believe you can have a ‘combo’ set with HID on your High beam and normal halogens on your Low beam.
According to the ‘boy racers’ HID in your normal headlights stands for “Hi I’m a D/H” due to the fact that a lot of people install them and do not adjust them correctly. Blinding (for want of a better word) the oncoming traffic.
I opted for 55watt upgrade to my 240 blitz spotties. Brilliant

Guys, I'm not fixed on HID and you have easily talked me out of them.
I would love the JW Speaker headlights but I think they are way over priced, besides where do the mods STOP:mad::bangin:
The Philips Xtreme Bulbs look like they are the winner extra better light at little cost. Thanks for the link NewLandyOwner.
My question is off the top of your heads save me going to check in manual are the MY12 2.2 Puma a H4 Bulb or H5 I know previous models TD5 etc were H4's want to double check they have not changed before I order them.
Besides I don't mind saving money by not buying HID. I have a 22" LED light bar from Tigerz11 to go on front once I sort bulbar out, so that should give me ample daylight. :D

I'll give you a tip, They never stop.
should have kept your Hilux :o
When I had my Landcruiser I just drove it & rememberd back to my Landrover days & thought what a sap I was, constantly spending money on this, that and the other thing.
Now I'm back in a Landrover ....and Loving it .
but as they say, history repeats itself. I'm now constantly spending money on this, that and the other thing. I wrote down a list of mods on it & If I was looking at the list in referance to somone elses Landy I'd be in awe, but when its on mine I'm wondering when will it stop.
.... Probably when I dont have a mailing adress ;)

Sorta. As far as I know, the rules are that the headlight needs to have the ability to adjust height either automatically or from inside the cabin. They ALSO require dedicated headlight washers. I know that because I've had to fail people before because their headlight washers didn't work.
I've got 35w HIDs in my Volvo and the light in the 1st 100m is great. After that, it starts to fade out. But keep in mind that is with the standard lense. It does blind people and I plan to modify the reflector and lense to accomodate projectors.
Back on topic, I havn't had issues with my HIDs I have had them for a good 3 years now. They only thing it does is the flapper (H4) sticks and that's only because the car doesn't get driven very often. Just look at buyer/seller feedback and buy from the one with the least amount of negative feedback and is local so you can visit them.

You can buy Zenon globes that are a factory option for the defender for $66 a pair,I've got them and they are twice the globe Halogens are, once a Traxide upgrade,$130 is added the lights are everything you need, and you'll never burn out your light switch either. Pat

Xenon globes are not an option for the Defender - the whole Xenon lighting system is a factory option so just buying genuine Xenon globes to put in your halogen will not work. If you fit the full Landrover system in your car then you will be legal but it will be an expensive exercise.
Also you need to make sure these super halogen globes are ADR compliant as many to not meet requirements. Some of the bluer Philip globes are not ADR compliant.

I bought them straight from the dealer in Perth, the light is white, not yellow and is a good improvement. My Tdi has a Traxide upgrade, the TDCi has just the globes, the TDCi is every bit as good and should be better once the wiring upgrade is also done.My TDCi has high crystal lenses, the Tdi has standard H4's.I'll chase down the part number for you. The upgrade wiring kits can be found here Traxide (http://www.traxide.com.au/HL_kits.html), you'll be dealing with a forum member and they are quality kits.

I now have those Phillips in, they did make a difference and the light is whiter than originals, I'm very happy with the decision. And no complaints from oncoming traffic.

Those plug and play HID kits are NOT suited for road use!!!!
Put them in spotties if you must, on high beam only!
The way the HID globe puts out light is very different from halogen and the lens and reflector is NOT suitable and you will get lots of glare on low beam.
There is a Defender in my area that has or had one of these fitted and many times I've been severely annoyed with him when I'm coming the other way.
Anybody who really must have HID and is not 100% worried about legality, go have a look at www.hidplanet.com where there are plenty of examples of people doing it properly, by retrofitting a projector into their housing. Also a lot of info there on the emerging tech of LED.
Trouble with most LED setups is they are completely fugly....
Mark my words though, put those plug and play kits in and everybody will hate you and call you things you don't want to hear....

FWIW Narva, Philips and Osram now have +120 H4 globes.
And before we hear the usual "Narva is crap.." all the Narva H4 and H1 globes I've bought have been repackaged Osrams ;)

hey guys, if youre after HID's while maintaining legality, I believe I read that they would be legal with auto levelers and washers (which is the case in the saab I have)
However they would also be legal if you fitted a projector into it? is that right? because if so, I would look at getting the crystal headlamp lenses (so no flutes to throw the light around) and look at getting a set of morimoto conversion kits. They basically plug and play sans a little bit of trimming on the shroud to get it to sit flush in the headlamp housing.
In turn you get a high low beam projector with a crisp cutoff and no glare!! and they will still work with the manual headlamp level adjusters!!

I would look at getting the crystal headlamp lenses (so no flutes to throw the light around) They simply have the 'flutes' built into the reflector instead of the glass.

Have HID in my Audi great light in a car. In a4x4 sealed beams the go don`t
finish up as fish bowls after any decent water crossings Have just ordered
95- 115 sealed beams off ebay will post when assesed:D

but with the projectors reflectors being in the bulb I suppose thats still better than the flutes being on the glass :D

26th February 2013, 05:07 PM
Projectors bypass the flutes in the reflector but need unfluted glass.
Yes, Morimotos in crystal cut lights will work well.
As for legality, I'm pretty sure that here self
Leveling and washers is mandatory no matter what.
It works fine with manual levellers but not strictly legal.
