Now you would think fitting a new rocker cover gasket on my TD5 would be easy , right?
Wrong, I cannot get the gasket to sit down in the slot in the cover.
I'm sure there is an easy way, I just don't know it.
Expert advice would be welcome from this knowledgeable bunch.
Thanks in anticipation.. Nick ( Worane)

Push the rubber and metal grommets through the rocker cover and into the holes in the new gasket. That will hold the gasket in place and give you a fighting chance of getting everything lined up.

Nick, two methods, use some Hylomar to stick it in place on the cam shaft cover and like Paul said, make sure all the round grommet sections are seated home in the holes. The second method is to use a 'small amount' of Permatex gasket material (Ultra Black) in the 'channels' of the cam shaft cover to stick the gasket in place leaving it to go 'off' over night.

I find it a two person job, one either side to guide the cam shaft cover into place while moving the gasket back into place if it moves. Once the gasket is in place tighten bolts to 8Nm (from memory).

I found that the Injector Harness was the point where the gasket was not sitting flat, so make sure that is seated home before you put the cover back on.

Ian,

Sorry but you've made the process waaaaaaay too hard. It is one person and 10-15 minutes max.

Two dabs of sealant as per Rave on the rear cam seal, and grommets into the gasket. Anything else is just pointless ****ing about.

cheers

That is EXACTLY right ^^^^. I've lost count of the number I have done.

Just out of interest, did they supply the right gasket? there is early and late, the difference being the radius of the rear half moon. Get it wrong and oil cascades forth worse than before.

Paul /Justin, I must not have held my tongue in the right position ;) as I found it fiddly and a PITA :)

I will have to put on the Barbie and invite you two over next time I need to do it :)

Sometimes the gasket is hard to fit especially if it has been packed (shrink wrapped) with the rear cam plug part twisted.

OK. What I have done is to clean off any oil with metho and applied a thin layer of permatex.
Before I started that I cut up a piece of 1/2 ply an cut out various slits to allow for the oil baffles just oversize .I then fitted the steel bolt locators in the holes and clamped it all down to the board.
Lets hope all stays in place tomorrow when I unclamp it.
Thank you all for putting me on the right track.
The whole thing is a bit of a bastard really. Pommy engineering at it's usual difficult best. The yanks would have just used cork, like everyone else.
Next job will be the starter solenoid. Another lovely job.
Thanks again. Nick.

I use super glue to retain difficult rocker cover gaskets into the cover. A drop or thin line every inch or so, hold each section until set, then refit cover. Adds about 5 minutes to the job.

As Justin C said earlier, there are 2 different ones subject to vin.
Part number ERR7094 for up to Vin 1A736339
Part number LVP000020 for Vin 2A736340 on
check the part number you purchased against your vin number.

Yep got the correct gasket , thanks to the good people at roverlordoffroadspares. OVERNIGHT.
Could not get it in the little dimple at the back of the motor.
Took the gasket back off and placed in in the dimple on the block and then into the bolt locators. Starting at the rear I put all of the other steel locators in place with the rear bolts just started in their threads. Making sure to be careful near the cam chain I lowered it all into place and finished off tightening it all back down. Job finally done.
Thanks Guys for all your help. Regards Nick.
