View Full Version : Diesel Shortage

Bumped into a friend today just after lunch. She asked me if I had heard about the diesel shortage, which I had not. So i straight away went to my local servo only to find that they had run out.

I then took off to the next closet Caltex (I have a Caltex fuel card) which was 15 kays away to find they are rationing diesel, 50 litres max.

This is ok as I am in the D1 with about a quarter of a tank so this filled it. I then went home and went on the net to see what going on. I find out that Bendigo and Echuca are almost out of diesel.

I then jump into my D2 and go to an independent in town who has a sign on the pumps, max 300 litres. This is crossed off now saying 200 litres. So I filled the D2 plus a 20 litre jerry.

What ios going on?

Found this...

The fuel shortage is due to problems with two production units at the Geelong Shell refinery, which has been forced to ration diesel supplies since Tuesday.

Shell Australia spokesman Paul Zennaro said one problem was electrical, while the other was still being investigated.

"We have been experiencing a severe problem with diesel supply," Mr Zennaro said. "Shell is hoping to reinstate diesel production by the weekend."

This explains it...

All emergency services on the GRN here in SA were advised to fill up, and keep it full.

No other explanation, but it was enough for me to fill the tank.

Bugger thats why both servos in Kilmore had none earlier today

So the D3 sitting at home with maybe 2-3 litres in the tank is a poor choice to use at the moment?

Ran it down as I was planning to drain the tank and see if I can 'reinflate' the dented section back to standard capacity. Left it like that while O/S so hopefully the missus doesn't need it.

Yesterday I noticed the diesel price blanked out at Healesville Shell, thought nothing of it, had to go to ER at Maroondah hospital last night & whilst waiting there for hours saw this thread on my phone & stopped at Ringwood Shell on the way home about 1.30 went in & asked (because I didnt want the dregs) & the console operator heard nothing of a diesel shortage so I "topped up" with 125 litres, spewing I didn't even have a discount coupon.

But thanks for the heads up.

My dad was just telling me about this actually.. He lives in Bendigo and said most places are empty or rationing. I'm a little concerned... I have to go to Bendigo and back in 2 weeks, then on boxing day we're booked to go on the spirit of tasmania!

Anyone know if this will affect Tassie? Worst case I don't need much to get to the ferry terminal, but would need to fill up in Tassie, or it could become a rather extended holiday! (sounds good?!)

from another forum

There is no production issue, according to my Shell guy they received a sea tanker of diesel at Geelong about a week ago.

When they were unloading the ship in to the refinery storage tanks they accidentally pumped it into one which still had unleaded petrol in it contaminating the whole shipment so have had to re-refine it all before they can sell it.

They are just calling it a production issue so they don't look stupid.

 I didn't even think of that... If I board with a full tank, I'll let them syphon a bit if they're desperate.

Maybe I can catch a lift on a yacht!

Which makes me think... It would be a little ironic if people can't make it to Hobart for the finish of the yacht race, and yet they sail a few thousand kms from Sydney with nothing more than the wind.

The latest I read was that Shell resumed production on Sunday and is running extra shifts to catch up with demand. The indication was that supplies would begin to return to normal from Tuesday (11/12/2012).

Bit of a panic on the way home tonight, drove halfway home friday and to work this morning on the fuel light planning to fill up on the way home.
Went to 3 servo's that were out of diesel which i half expected being that Tullamarine is a busy transport area but luckily safeway fuel having a low roof wasnt sold out yet.

Managed to get 450 litres late today at a Caltex truck servo that was out earlier.
They got 45'000 droped mid morning and word got out.
There are 4 other outlets within 10km that where out.
A few of the other trucks I work with are under 1/4 full and couldn't find fuel on their way from job sites to the quarry.
As mine is out tonight on double shift I'll be looking for the same again by lunch time tomorow.

Please don't take it all and store it at home, some of us need deisel to work:angel:
And maybe a little for play:wasntme:

True, the Trumpy might get a run tomorrow just to preserve the oily stuff.

SA Ambulance, Fire Service & Country Fire Service have just been advised to fill up with diesel, NOW. :o

Some stations are holding jerry cans of diesel as back up.

And, all this with a week of high temps & high winds.

Fingers crossed.

I've noticed some BP's and Caltex outlets out Melbourne's west are a hit and miss thing.
They all seem to know when they are getting fuel(5 hour widow) but only one load.
BP on the Calder(near the race track) had some this morning outbound only.
Ran out mid morning but both had fuel latter on.
The little bloke I try to use in town had @5,000 droped and was rationing.
He gave me enough for the night driver to do his run but I'll have to hit Melton in the morning.
The large Caltex(who I try to avoid) is getting a full load o'nite.
It's slowly getting back to normal, it's a mater of grab it if you see it.
