hey all,

I need a new windscreen rubber for my 1998 110 Defender. I had a quick look on ebay, seems there are a couple different ones??? Are they age specific? Anyone have a part number?

Are there good and bad brands?

cheers,
Serg

I had a few words a while ago, with the guy that does all the windscreen replacements and repairs to the Defenders at the RAAF base up the road, and he says he won't fit anything but genuine,as anything else ends up being a warranty claim.

Thanks Ned, but I dont know which part# I need

Wayne, the guy at Obriens said they are all much of a muchness when I asked about genuine Vs other....but Im preppared to go with genuine if they are actually better. Atleast Obriens are happy for me to supply the rubber as their quoted price for rubber alone was $220.....

From what I can gather the windscreen rubber is the same on all Defenders, CPE 500010 has been superceeded by CPE 500020, what the difference, if any I don't know, something to ask a dealer I suppose, just let me know if it's any use :) oh and I was told the same as far as genuine vs aftermarket. The pain in the arse they are to fit it's not worth it to see it cracking and splitting 12months down the line.

yes, mine was supplied when I had my window replace 2 years ago or so...it has now seperatted at the join and lets buckets of water in.

I have no confidence in dealers to have any knowledge about part# changes, different brand options etc...

CPE500020 is the most common I have seen on ebay, with some suppliers not specifiying a part#. I have emailed this mob about thsi one??

Ok so what is the difference? And why are they saying pc500020 will fit?

Don't know, Maybe that is an aftermarket number or maybe the original number is superceded to that. That number came out of an original parts manual from 1986. The one you are looking at in UK has that number so I would be going with that one. Price is good too.

That'll be an aftermarket one as the originals are at least £70 in the UK. I fitted a new one before I shipped my Landie, just after I replaced mine an army mate gave me the one I have (which explains the older part number). CPE500020 is the new Land Rover part number which superceeded the original I have. From what I can gather about the life of even original ones I think I'll keep it for when mine goes ;)

ummm do you mean AM not OEM?

No,I meant OEM:eek:
That just means that they aren't genuine, just like the OEM suspension bushes that don't last.

The rubber on a genuine windscreen seal feels different to the cheaper versions that I have found also.

im confused??? I thought OEM = Original Equipment Manufacture...so are you saying its made by the same company but not the same as genuine?

so who supplies the LR dealers? could it be the one I priced isnt "genuine'?

Wayne, where did/do you by a GENUINE windscreen rubber?

just rang Karcraft. $x +gst, $16.50 + gst freight. They could not tell me a brand, but they were NOT genuine. Of coarse they are not having any problems with them.....haha

Just rang BMI, $x+gst, $20+gst frieght. They say OEM but cant tell me manufacture.

Now if said company makes the one in the LR box and then the one in their own box, are they going to go to the trouble of injecting a different recipe of rubber into the mold???

Wayne, have you had a genuine and a OEM side by side for comparison?

Yes basically, and we have the same problems with OEM suspension bushes that never last as long as GENUINE.
Sometimes this can be due to proprietary patents on materials etc.Sometimes I think that the manufacturer of the components try and cut a few corners and reduce costs and sell as an OEM part, and the cost cutting measures come back to bite them on the bum:eek:
If the part you ordered is in a genuine Land Rover box or bag, then it MUST be genuine. If not, then it may be OEM.
When it was mentioned to me about the windscreen rubbers, the windscreen guy didn't try and sell me one,he just told me to go and buy Genuine and see the difference. So I did,and while I never had them directly side by side,I did have a look abd feel of both, and the rubber in the Genuine seal was totally different, the seal wasn't as soft nor as black in colour,it felt more solid.
So I have no reason to believe this guy who fits them to the local RAAF vehicles would have any reason to make up stories,as he wasn't selling me a seal anyway.
The other place you find a lot of problems with OEM stuff on Land Rovers is with Brake caliper seals.....it always seems to be rubber products.....I guess rubber just isn't rubber

I need to replace my windscreen (insurance job), and noticed my windscreen rubber will also need replacing. I imagine this is covered, so will need to buy my own.

Karcraft sell a Bearmach job for a good price. MR Auto is a bit more expensive, but they didn't tell me the brand.

Any ideas if the Bearmach rubber is OK?

My windscreen needed replacing about 2 years ago . The rubber seal had a lot of sun damage , so i brought a new one thinking there all a muchness . After 6 months or so it started to shrink , it now has gap of about 10mm. to keep the rain out i've filled it withSelastic . Knowing what i know now i would make sure it was genuine , hope this helps jimr1 ..
