About $60 for the somewhat restrictive HCRS Rego in NSW ..................... I think.

But I guess you're enquiring about full NSW Rego, the answer to which will vary depending on a number of factors and which I'll leave to those who are more in touch with 2a full rego.

Yep was in the high $900's for a rag top LWB 2a & $250 for comprehensive insurance of $2500.00 But the greenslip was the BITCH

About 90 bucks a year on club rego, plus membership costs down here in Vic. Up to 90 days use - by logbook. Simples.:)

NSW, due 30/12. 2a 109 petrol utility.

Registration $59
Motor Vehicle Tax $402
Green slip (NRMA with concessions for other insurance) $388

Total $849

The green slip will vary a bit according to which company you go with, and what other insurance you have with them, and where you live, but don't expect anything dramatic. Motor vehicle tax just keeps going up, and represents almost half the total.

...Actually it's $54/year including the greenslip for HCRS, + $35 for the original purchase of the H plate. Of course it comes with a lot of restrictions and fines of around $1,500 if caught using the vehicle outside the regulations because the vehicle is considered unregistered/uninsured when used outside the rules.

NSW rego and tax ($57 +$402) = $459
Green slip (Shannons) = $598.35
Comprehensive (Shannons) = $272.76

Shannons were by far the cheapest greenslip for me, AAMI wanted $800!!!
But you need to have comp or fire and theft insurance with them before they'll do a greenslip insurance.

i was looking at rego papers from 2006 tax was only about $90.
so when getting a blue slip what things do they check for?
are they normally fairly strict on the old landies?

How strict will be dependent largely on who is doing it. As I understand it, they are supposed to check for the same as a pink slip, plus checking that the vehicle is exactly as described; that is, that there is nothing dodgy about its identity, and that all its details match - i.e. no modifications, has the engine it should, etc.

Obviously it helps if the inspector is familiar with Landrovers - for example, I have had (with a pink slip) an inspector give one look and state "Well, there is a fail straight off - no pedal rubbers!", not knowing that pedal rubbers were a fairly rare option on all Series Landrovers. If the inspector has no familiarity with them, expect to have to be armed with a parts book etc. On the other hand, one who is familiar will know exactly where to look for the rust you missed, or the dodgy repairs.

what do people do if they put a holden engine in years ago and now go to get rego?

Someone who has been there will be able to help, but I believe that in NSW there will be no problems provided you can prove the engine was in it when it was last registered (either the old papers, or if it was registered fairly recently it may be still on the system) and the installation looks reasonably professional.

Oh - and in addition to the approx $900 - $1000 rego/third party cost don't forget the roadworthy cost, the stamp duty, admin fee for an unregistered vehicle and the cost of plates.

I got a box trailer registered yesterday - $69 rego, $45 Admin (including plates) and $27 stamp duty - will be much more for a landie.

Are these the same for someone who is visiting on a visa? Or would I have to go a different direction for that?

Four times more expensive for rich Americans - you can afford it.

How's the other states?

You must be classed as country, or have it rego'd as a wagon. Mine is just under $1200 for metro ute rego.

Yes, as far as I know.

In some states registration is possible for less than twelve months, and I think in all cases you can get a refund if registration is cancelled, but after "handling fees" it won't amount to much.

Ok - same cost for rich Americans. To get rego in Aust you will need a verifiable address. If you have no particular preference for a rego address I would choose a state or territory that will suit your needs best - for example in the Australian Capital Territory (Canberra) you can get rego in 3 month blocks and there is roadworthy requirements (there is on purchase) so you can travel and renew as necessary irrespective where you are in Aust.

Other States may or may not have similar arrangements.
