aftermarket radio and car date/time

I am looking to install an aftermarket radio in my D3 SE. I read that the LR radio is the source of the car's date and time.

Has anyone found a solution to this with some aftermarket radio or other device...OR is not having a date/time source for the CAN bus not a problem?

And on a side note..if you have installed an after market GPS capable head unit, where does the GPS antenna get installed?

If you put in an aftermarket radio you loose the clock in your message centre. While the new radio may or may not work with the steering wheel controls I believe that the steering wheel controls that adjust setup settings for the message center may not work.

I have not heard of any after market radio fitment that still retains full functionality for cars fitted with the mid spec or high end radio gear.

I installed a Pioneer unit in my D3. Yes, the clock on the centre dash LCD no longer works, but I've not had any problems as a result. The radio itself has a clock so I don't really notice its absence.

I installed my GPS antenna up inside the high-mounted brake light cover. It was a right pain the the a$$ to install it (you'd need super-flexible, tiny hands to do it easily) but I figured it was the best location to give a clear view upwards to the GPS satellites. I've heard others have located it beneath the black plastic bung in the roof for the original GPS/car phone antenna, or just on the top of the windscreen.

IIRC - There are also issues changing the 'Settings', Follow me home lights, etc...

I remember talking to one of our Traffic Police a few years ago and as they rip out the radio for their comms, etc.. He was saying that if they need to change any of the settings, they have to plug a head unit back in.

Exactly - some people install the original radio in the back behind one of the panels and still have it connected with the new radio running as a stand alone item (as it should have been in the first place). If I could find a suitable radio to meet my needs I would try to also install a connector that would allow the original radio to be plugged in when needed. However having said that once the message centre has been set up there is probably little need to change the settings.

The last few threads where aftermarket radios have been installed steering controls for the radio has been lost.
