Hi - need your help to make a decision by tomorrow!

MY11 2.7 SE, 25kms
MY10 3.0 SE, 50kms
Price and spec other than engine size is about the same in terms of leather etc.

The 3.0 has a long range tank but from my perspective is fairly useless and would mean a spare wheel carrier as the spare is currently sitting in the boot. Would that make the vehicle much longer?

Have seen the recent thread but was wondering

1. Would a late model 2.7 be more reliable than an early 3.0 - ie in terms of issues being ironed out?

2. any thoughts on whether the 2.7 will depreciate faster in as much as in a few years time when it comes to selling people will only be looking for 3.0l? ]

Any practical thoughts gratefully received.

Cheers!

My choice would be the 3.0 litre over the 2.7 any day of the week, unless you really want to do lots of heavy off roadig and prefer 17" wheels.

But that's just my opinion, with either vehicle though consider getting the extended Alliance Warranty and then you will have peace of mind for another 2 years and or 100k on top of the factory Warranty.

Good luck with your decision.

cheers,
Terry

I too would go for the 3.0 over the 2.7.

I wouldn’t be concerned about ‘issues’ as most of the issues were sorted out in the D3. There are a few ‘quirks’ but generally it is sorted by software updates. Residuals should be better on the 3.0 too.

Go the 2.7 due to the lower kms and more warranty. Go with the 3.0 if you are seriuosly towing.

I would go the 3.0Lt.
The service history and warranty is very important however.

As a matter of interest, what sort of $ are you looking at?

Cheers, Craig

Don't forget, rear wheel carriers aren't cheap.

Thanks guys

If it werent for the long range tank and need for a spare wheel carrier I think I would go for the 3.0. Just concerned that it would make it less practical around town and make the vehicle a fair bit longer?

Both are around mid $60ks

The car yard actually has it - they took it off thinking it would be easier to sell so they can put back on fairly easily. Anyone with any experience of how practical it is with the spare on the rear door?

I was looking at that SE at Perth Toyota, I asked them to enquire about getting a decent rear bar and rear wheel carrier through their channels at wholesale price, they reckon they could do a good deal on the car and bar. I'm not sure what bar they have on it, especially since it is removable.
Cheers Tom.

It's mounted on the rear bumper - and it only makes the vehicle a little bit "longer" - fairly easy to fold out of the way when you want to get in the back, best thing I put on my D3 in my opinion ... I love the long range tank for the range it gives when outback touring.

You could always take the 3.0l with the rear wheel carrier and if you found that it was 'excess to requirements' then you could remove the carrier and the extra tank/s, sell them and return car to standard tank and standard underslung spare wheel.

You really need to workout how much a pain the rear wheel carrier would be. In our case our car gets used for the school run by SWMBO and I'm sure she would hate having to swing it out of the way every time she opened the boot. The kids also open and use the boot and I'm not sure how they would cope with a RWC.
If you are doing heaps of touring then probably not so much of an issue.

Good points xtreme and ashes. Guess returning to standard will add quite a $ - will speak to ARB who fitted it apparently.

Go with the 3.0

The wheel carrier doesn't make the car that long. Lots or LRs have had the wheel carrier on the back, D1, D2s and Defenders. There are carriers that have a link to the back door and swing with the door, haven't seen on on a D3/4 but the defenders certainly have them.

Cost of returning to standard would probably be completely offset by sale of LR tank and RW carrier, which I don't think you'd have any trouble at all selling via the markets section of this forum.

The ability to buy fuel on the cheap cycle out ways any inconvenience.

Also, ability to go straight through between cities is a bonus - the std tank won't do Melb-Adl etc

If SWMBO is going to do most of the driving and it will spend most of its time around the city and doing the shopping and will call the NRMA is she gets a flat, then you don't want the rear carrier, she will hate it unless she is the adventurer type.

If you plan on doing long range touring at all you will love the tank and carrier. And if you ever get a flat and need to change a tyre and you have a standard car you will curse the day you didn't buy the one with the carrier. The standard set up for accessesing the spare on these cars was designed by a madman. Apart from anything else you are almost certain to bugger up the winch and have to replace it after you have tried it.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the useful advice. Ended up going for the 2.7 - it's basically in as new condition and the extra year or so on the new car warranty swung it for us. Also figured we would be more than happy with it for 3 years or so and then upgrade to the 3.0 (or D5) then.

Cheers
Darren

Was quoted $4k by Barbagallo the other day when I queried them. Apparently cost has gone up significantly due to the fact that they actually payout occasionally!
