View Full Version : Auto Gearbox won't engage

Just had the front suspension arms, bushes and ball joints replaced on 2006 LR D3 TDV6 S at 115,000 kms.
2 days later, start engine, car moves very slowly then stops, revving engine makes no difference. No forward or reverse movement possible. Road assist results in car towed to dealer.
Vehicle dealer serviced from new, no other problems.
Is it possible there was defective work in the ball joint replacement that has caused this - or is it just a coincidence and I now have another problem?

There is a CV retaining clip that, if not correctly seated, will result in no drive to that wheel. Hence the car won't drive (unless in low-range Rock-Crawl).

Thanks, but there's no drive to any wheels and low-range does not engage either.
Would this happen if both cv retaining clips were incorrectly seated ? I am hoping this might be the cause since this would be a warranty repair rather than possibly a more expensive gearbox repair.
(The steering was a little heavy after the cv work was done last Thursday)

I would get the repairer to look at it and give an opportunity to fix. First get them to look at the gear linkages as they can slip if worn. There were a number of posts on it on the UK site. Easy fixed.
If not looks like they may have stuffed up.

In normal mode, if there is no drive to one wheel, then the car won't drive at all (it may slowly crawl forward at high revs, then stop), so it would appear as if there is no drive to all wheels.
However, the bit about not being able to select Low Range seems to point to something else.
Cheers,
Gordon

Vehicle examined today and reported that the drive shaft now requires replacement. Comment was the work on the ball joints etc may have stressed the drive shaft and this led to it's failure.

I find that very hard to believe!
What a load of ____, sometimes mechanical workshops have to take some responsibilty of what they do.

I think it is more likely they damaged it when fitting. Look for mushrooming on the hub flang. I would push for fixing.
Dealer or indie?

Squeaky wheel gets the oil. :D Make noise about it. I assume they are saying it is a half shaft. This would give the same symptoms as gghaggis said. Tell them you do not expect a bill.

Just to close this one out - the opinion was that the n/s/f drive shaft cv had failed (it failed a few days after the suspensions arms, balls joints and bushes had been replaced).
Now I'm thinking if the n/s/f has failed - what is the reliability of the o/s/f drive shaft as I am about to embark on a 4000 km trip into January.
Thanks All.

CV is part of driveshaft part. Did you see the diveshaft that failed? Did they say how it failed?
CVs/DS are un unusual failure, but do happen.
It would seem too cinsidendal that it failed soon after. Just hope they didn't do something to the other CV as well.

No, did not get to see the failed D/S but the improvement in the steering/handling is a noticeable improvement so maybe there was excessive wear in the D/S just replaced.
The LR dealer service to date has been good, guess just have to move on now and hope the o/s/f gets me through the trip !

When changing the lower arms on my RRS, we (the indie I used & myself) couldn't shift the N/S driveshaft and ended up with very large persuading stick on the end of it. The CV ended up being the casualty. It's plausible they've done the same with yours.
