Went to do wheel bearings today, dug out all my old Rangie (83) stuff. Argghhh! Humungous great nut. 2 1/16 AF! Looks like it will need to be a "Deep" socket too. Probably 3/4 drive as well.

2 1/16 "Deep" - Correct?

Comment?

Being still Defender "dumb", did notice that there are no Panhard rods either.

Does Defender just depend on the leading and trailing links to locate the body with a little assistance from the sway bars. Anyone put in panhard rods?

First off it's metric. The Puma is supposedly the first all metric Defender.
Secondly, the nut is only done up to 490Nm so have fun.

the front will have a panhard rod, the rear is still TA + A frame. Same as RRC, same as Disco 1, same as every coil sprung LR 90, 110, 130

preceeding with "I have never seen or touched a TDCi Defender"

I highly doubt it, Id guess they are the same as TD5, which has a crush tuber between the bearings so you just do the hub nut up to a specified torque and that preloads the bearings. Unlike the older type with nut, tab washer and lock nut.....

So, does anyone know for sure 2 1/16 or 53mm deep socket?

its 52mm.

if you use the stakenut and bearing spacers setup method (which requires access to all 40 of the various thickness shims to allow you to set 0/0 float/preload) you realistically cant correctly change your wheel bearings and there is no point in "adjusting" your wheel bearings.

If you go back to the proper method of bearing setup as per the tdi300 and early td5's with the double nuts and lock tabs then it becomes a doable task.

................but at the moment not replacing the bearings - just greasing. Use shimming that is there???????????

is it the normal procedure to swap out seals so the bearings can be run in oil?
