Hi,

Thinking about purchasing a second car to play harder and not worry to much. came across this D2 here does anyone know something about the car?

1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY ES II SUV Private Cars For Sale in NSW - carsales.com.au (http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/land-rover-discovery-1999-13928821?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=23&page=2&eapi=2&__N=246+1216+1246+1252+1247+1282+4294965541+429496 5540+898&num=15&silo=Stock&sort=~Odometer)

I guess the V8 would be very, very thirsty?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

Looks like an awesome toy, might have already had a bit of a thrashing by the look of it, but if it has been well maintained and had the broken bits replaced than might be ok, if it comes with all the kit then there are quite a few bucks there just in the accessories.

The pictures in the workshop look like they are Cremorne Prestige at Artarmon, you could give Greg a call and ask him what he knows about the car.

Hi,

yes will call CP tomorrow, called the owner according to him hardly used (but I guess that’s what they all say). Had 2 days play day with my local 4x4 club in Blue Mountains over weekend and just don't want to trash my tourer. Still learning the rops but had so much fun :-) so love to have a play toy (wife will have to give up her Forester) but still a bit steep in price and I'm afraid I get a shock every time pulling in a servo with the V8 6L.

Some pics form the weekend below:

That D2 has had an absolute fortune spent on it, there were a number of posts on here with his build up of it from a bog stocker to the trick and very expensive bit of gear it is now.

From memory it is more a trick tourer than a hard arse bush basher. I suspect you would be a little bit disappointed in how it compares off road to your D3 to be frank. Still a very nice car though.

Personally I think that a well modified D1 is a better off roader than a D2 for the really rugged stuff, Still chances are others will disagree.

cheers,
Terry

Agree that a D1 is easier to modify and bash around with impunity - less dodgy electrics and better clearances. As the D2 above doesn't have additional lockers, your D3 with some decent tyres and a bit of body protection would no doubt out-drive it off-road.

Cheers,

Gordon

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the info, why do you think a D1 would be better,
I guess for the amount James likes for his D2 I could
get a reasonable D1 and still have quite a bit spare money left for moods.

Also thought about a Defender but with my height 193 cm it probably would be
Quite uncomfortable.

Really like to have a play toy which I could take nearly everywhere and not be to concerned about panel damage etc.

Cheers

Steve

As Gordon says less dodgy electrics and better (much) clearance, ramp angles etc. The D1 is much lighter from memory and has quite a different rear suspension which is easier to modify for articulation. You can also get a early non ABS model like mine which while not really a good thing on road makes life easier for mods.

You can fit 15" rims to a D1 which means much cheaper tyres and often better selection as well. Parts are so dirt cheap it doesn't matter if you stove in a door or guard etc.

Everything is pretty simple on a D1 but they still are reasonably comfortable and nice to drive, whereas a old Fender is really a very basic bit of gear that often have already been bashed to death, many D1's have never been off road still to this day.

Re V8 v TDI, I picked a V8, poor fuel economy but goes like stink and cheap to fix or replace. Try to buy a good TDi secondhand and cry when you find out the price, if you can find one.

Whereas a 3.9 V8 is easy to find and cheap to buy, plus a chipped 3.9 with full extractors and a 2.5 inch pipe sounds like a hot rod V8 Supercar when your nailing it. ...:p

Down side, no room in the back, pretty basic vehicle and getting old, but the no room and it being basic is what makes it a good platform for a off road basher.

If you want to Steve come for a drive down Goulburn and have a drive of my D1 and see for yourself.

cheers,
Terry

thanks gent's

so would you rate a modified D1 or D2 on par with the Toyos Cruisers and Patrols or would I cop a flogging at each challenge?

unfortunately I don't think there are any other LR in the club.

Mind you everyone was quite impressed by the D3

Terry, would take you up on it next year, heading to Gouldburn river on Friday and afterwards do the New England tablelands trip with AULRO

Hi Steve,

a well set up modded D1 or D2 can and will easily clean up modded Cruisers or Patrols especially with the right driver, D3/4's tend to make most of us look good ...me included!

Off road and in the rough stuff I must admit my D1 is more fun than my D3 because I have to think about what I'm doing and then actually drive it.

cheers,
Terry
