Went to get new tyres on the 130 on Saturday morning (after clearing with the bank first!)
4 went on no problem but the 5th just went flat.

Stripped it again, cleaned the bead applied bead sealer again not holding up. Sprayed soapy water on the bead...... Nope.

Flipped the rim over and you could feel the air leaking out of a crack in the rim. Well inside the bead area and not near where the centre mounts!

These are standard 130 steel rims, riveted centre, 6.5" wide 16"

I bought them through the marketplace here and while I have used it for a few years and I doubt it would have failed in use, the fact it was the only one with a tube fitted may suggest the previous owner knew.

Any one seen this before? The tyre place said was rare but not the first time they had seen this kind of failure. They said can be welded but not so sure I want to do that.

Regards

James

I understood that the rims with riveted center dont hold air and can't be used tubeless.

I have 8 x standard 130 rims welded centers & tubeless, all hold air OK, I've only used tubes with riveted centres.

I had 3 crack in a County whilst travelling around Aus. Scary given one had a crack 8-10 inches long and open 3/4 ". They had done over 100,000km, 60 in that year.

I then went to Defender rims.

These rims are NOT designed for use as tubeless rims. In fact in the event of an accident an insurance company will refuse to insure you if they are not fitted up with tubes.

Crack or no crack, they should be tubed, end of story.
