Greetings All,
The wife and I are looking at taking an extended trip in our 110 and was wondering what spares you would suggest that I take?
Not being the most mechanically minded I was mainly thinking along the lines of those items that I could fix myself, but also your thoughts on carrying any vital parts, prone to breaking, that could be fixed by someone more skilled than I.
A few years ago I did a trip from Manchester, UK to the Gambia, down the west coast of Africa, and we carried a spare fuel pump, water pump, rear springs etc most of which we ended up using. Admittedly we were in an old BMW 3 series which wasn't built for the desert!
Your advice would be appreciated.
Regards
Jonathan

I'll start. You will have to get a 130 single cab ute to take all the spares the experts will now tell you that you will need.
Replace anything old, worn and iffy before you go. The first spare you should buy is a comprehensive workshop manual (by the time this thread peters out you will be advised to buy at least one of every part in the book). A few rolls of 'rescue me' type tape can be a real space and life saver. Now, let the list grow.

Since its a 2012 Defer you wont need to carry much. Get a good pre trip prep done by a independant LR specialist to fix the usual puma issues (rubbing hose clips etc) (NOT A DEALER) . Take a sat phone and plenty of water (for you not the car), On your trip get a service done every 10,000 klm instead of the book 20k. A spare air filter element incase your in a dust storm and a fuel filter incase you get some dodgy fuel.

Hi Jonathan,
There's plenty of good info in this thread:

I've done a lot of remote driving in my 08 puma, never had a breakdown, but I carry air, oil and a fuel filter, fan belt, as ugu80 said, rescue type tape is easier than carrying every hose. Lubricants to suit and a decent tool kit, there are a few big fuses under the drivers seat, handy to have these as spares as they arnt easy to get way out bush...but if your going remote, please carry enough water for everyone for a few days, tinned food under the seats and a sat phone or at the very least a spot tracker to help you should the unforeseen happen...remember to keep your vehicle weight down...have fun!!!

Thanks everyone, very helpful.
I guess it will take awhile before a 2012 Defender workshop manual comes out but before then would one for the 2007 defender suffice in most cases?

You can download the manual. I did. Do a search on here.
At over 1000 pages, its a good read ... ;)
