View Full Version : Puma gear knob cracking

I've seen two other Pumas were the gear knob hs started to crack and fall apart. Now my Puma is developing the first signs of it.
I know the gear knob is fused to the whole gear lever shaft plastic casing.
Has anyone else experienced a cracked knob :wasntme: and if so what was the fix?

Ok I`m up for the obvious answer here :) Um I`d try rubbing in a little moisturiser  :wasntme:
Anyway enough of that now. If it is all fused together as you say then I`m guessing a new gear stick and knob.

One would hope that the 'treatment' would alleviate the pain... or at least 'distract'...:twisted::twisted:
For a cheap fix, smother in Araldite and enclose in Glad Wrap...

Well this thread didn't sink as low as it could have   :Rolling:
Anyway I now have a solution , just have to finalise payment and hopefully will have new alloy knobs for Christmas :D
Not the ones in the link above, much nicer :)
For now I won't say were I sourced them as they aren't fully released to market yet.

Now for a cool enough day to fit them.

Partially fitted:

Excuse the ordinary phone pic.
To fit the transfer lever I need to remove the box it attaches to. Unfortunately one of the bolts is stuck fast so that's now for another day
I did discover where a rattle is coming from. One of the clips holding down a protective plate over there transfer case actuator had broken off and so it was loose.

Mine cracked so badly it ended up crumbling off in my hands.
I ended up having to take a hacksaw to the plastic to get it off completely. I then bought a generic knob from supercheap, but the steel rod was poking out when it was placed on top so I had to grind just under an inch off to make it sit neatly.
Been ok for the most part but it was a cheapo and it gets loose every now and again so I have to tighten it up.

Probably yeah, but I'd not be much better off than I am now.
This (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Product/Street-Series-Gear-Knob-Round-Leather-AX-J2496/414656) is the one I have already.
If I stumble into someone wrecking one I'll probably take it all back to original.

There are basically only 2 issues with replacing one with another original shift:
- I suppose that eventually even a replacement original shift will crack up too(?).
- How expensive they are new.
Getting a secondhand one at least solves the latter issue.
Dazzler (thanks again, mate!) showed me that changing the whole stick really is a 5 min job. No tools. Just some grease needed.
Compare that to the effort to hack the stick and fit something else....

Hmm, just got back from an outback trip during which I noticed my gearshift knob beginning to crack. Get home and log on here and find it near the top of the page! May have to fire the casting furnace up for a solution:)

It must be the heat that does the damage. I see your post and the initiator of the original thread are both Territorians.

Actually the factory gear knob was in good condition when I changed it...
I was just a bit bored

You can easily take off the gearstick by undoing the bottom clips.(two of them)
Then just cut the top gear knob off. The factory gear knob has a hard plastic core...It's in the shape of a testicle. And I just cut it on half's with an angle grinder....

They are for my spotlight. I can't afford the nice engraved switches so just use the disco 2 one.

My decent control doesn't work sometimes when I am at the office - so the HR director tells me.

Reviving this thread - what is the 5 min way to replace the stick? I have the replacement part - just not sure what is the best method to replace it?
