View Full Version : Convincing the mrs..

I'm looking at getting a new 4wd within the next 12 months, and am leaning towards the defender 90. However, the mrs thinks they're boring and ugly :o. (She is trying to push me towards to a wrangler)
Does anyone have any tips/tricks that will help me in convincing her that it's the way to go?
Cheers,

Its time to move her on and get a new Mrs to go with the new 90, otherwise you will never be happy-shes just holding you back!

if the wrangler had a proper roof and i was in a position to buy new i would consider it along side a defender

the wrangler sport has the option of a diesel and auto

It does have a solid roof... Comes standard on the 4 door...
Along with a removable soft top for when u pull the solid roof off

Go the Jeep....
The 2.8L CRD is a Pearler, the 4(5) door has hard and soft tops.
Pulls like a train, much more civilised than the Defender....
I'd go Jeep before a 90 any day... And probably before a 110 as well.
Only catch Towing Capacity.... Only 2,200 kg for an Auto 5 door and only 1,000kg for a 3 door Wrangler.

i know they have a solid roof but the gutter only covers the doors so to put a full roof rack on you need bars running down the full height of the body....seems silly

Either something to do with body stiffness etc, or lack of mass... or maybe Jeep is more honest about towing capacity than LR. :wasntme:
I'd go for the Jeep CRDI, easy on fuel and could'nt be less reliable than a Land Rover...

Boring & ugly... Most mrs would prefer that in your new mistress! Go the defender. You heard the old adage to do with good old American know-how.... Why do jeeps break down? Because they can! In seriousness though speak to both dealers & see if you can loan/demo each type over a weekend. You & the mrs can get the best feeling for either. Keep mind the possibilities for modifying a defender are endless.

Well this is the way I look at it, the Jeep is that little bit more refined, BUT so is the Triumph and Victory motorcycles, they are more refined cruisers that handle and brake better BUT I still bought the Harley. I see the Land Rover as a classic.
Get the 90 and buy the wife a Beetle
I like the fact everytime I walk out the front door to get into the Deefer I think im going on an African Safari NOT the shopping mall. :D

Seriously If I HAD to buy another 4X4 (as long as I could keep my Td5 110 Defender) it would be a no brainer, I'd buy the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with CRD & Manual transmission, Factory long travel suspension & F&R Diff locks, full hardtop, a no brainer.
If you wife wants a Jeep talk her into an Unlimited, ON & Offroad the LWB is better than the shorty in both LR & Jeep. If you buy the 90 your wife will forever be on your case about how much you spend on it , Because to get it how YOU want it its going to be a lot of extra $$ and forever tinkering.
Infact now that the CRD is an option l might just talk my wife into swapping her car for one, as she really likes them too, especially the Dozer Unlimiteds !!!
(I might just have to renew my CCJC membership)

Bah ha ha :D:D:D A bit like Land Rovers British - made in India. ;)
Jokes aside I have considered buying one, there only 5K new. No need for it though. But for a Vespa buyer it would be a good option to keeping your manhood. You can only ride a Vespa in Italy and look cool, here you just look fruity :D
Oh and from memory the RE has a top speed of about 110 klm, sound familiar?

Actually a Harley is like a Rover 3.5
Great at producing Heat and Noise without the byproduct of Power.
And both leak oil ;)

Thanks guys, some good points to consider...
I'm gonna try and test drive them both in the next few days, see which one I prefer in the seat.
Whichever one I go for, I just know its gonna be a bottomless money pit.

I don't mind the Wranglers but I still think that the Defender wins hands down.. it's tows waaaaaay more than a Wrangler (which was important to me as I do a lot of towing) but it's also better offroad and I think it looks nicer.. and its more original.. there are so many Wranglers on the road now.. beside the Defender makes me smile every time I get in it, I don't think I would have felt that way with a Wrangler. :)

Everyone is forgetting something. not that there's anything wrong with that.
Be a man, buy a Defender.

I was in a similar position 6 months ago. I ended up buying a 4 door auto Wrangler. Forget the diesel Jeep. The extra dollars paying for a diesel is not worth it and this can be around an $8G difference depending on where you buy.
A mate bought a Defender 90 at the same time and he paid more again for it than the price of a diesel Jeep. He also reckons that my Wrangler has more usable space than his 90.
The Pentastar engine in the Jeep is a great performer and economical. The tiptronic auto box doesn't hunt and will allow you to hold gears if that is your penchant.
When choosing ask for the projected servicing costs too.
Good luck in your choice.

I considered 3 cars when i got the Defender 90.
Jeep wrangler
Fj cruiser
the 90
the jeep to me seemed to be 'plastic' i have mates who have them and while the perform great offroad they allways seem to need to push them really hard to do it.
(petrol though) suspension wise I think the jeep wins out, with the sway bar disconnects and all aswell. when i was looking they had just canned the old diesel and ha dent released the new one yet so only petrol was available (was buying new only) i had a sit in them and they felt 'cheap' unless you were to get the top of the line type deal, but then your talking some big dollars. . .
the FJ cruiser was comfortable huge available space drove so well on road, i even test drove it off road a little and it was brilliant, but i couldn't bring myself to buy an auto(cant get a manual FJ in Aus) and i was well and truly over independent suspension after my last 4wd. but if i had the money again. . . and the fj came in diesel manual here in Aus. . . i may jsut have got one. . a very very nice bit of kit the fj. . .
the Defender. . . to be honest this is how my purchase of the defender went. .
saw 39,990 drive away price. . walked into dealer next day and dropped 10G deposit. . . no test drive, no time wasted looking at it just walked in and purchased it.
for me it was simple, I love everything British, I also drive a 1963 Morris mini cooper and I ride a 2012 triumph street triple. as soon as my old 4wd is finished being parted out I will own all British forms of transport.
the Defender is so iconic, and it has personality. you don't just buy a defender you are making a new quirky best friend at the same time.
if you don't 'love' the defender and you have to ask the question. . . it may not be your cup of tea.. ..
test drive both, (offroad if they will let you) the jeep is more comfortable, but on long trips im thankful for the defenders upright seat and its somewhat strange at first ergonomics but it leaves you feeling fine after a long drive where my mates in jeeps are fatigued. . .
speak to jeep owners. . they have there own culture similar to land rover owners. though rarely will they speak about the issues there cars have so you want to see what there longevity is like. . . take a look at how many land rovers are still going on the road despite how 'unreliable' most people seem to think they are.

if it's a warranty job you simply drop it off (or they pick it up on a flatbed) and they sort it.
I wouldn't think land rover dealers would have too much trouble getting parts.
If you have a good dealer you should get a loan car in the mean time.
remember... picking your dealer is also very important!
as for out of warranty work, It's allot cheaper to buy Land Rover parts from the UK.
I imagine it's the same for Jeep with parts from the US.
but you then have to do the work yourself.
Not many mechanics let you supply the parts for the job
but then it's a bit of a pain if the part is wrong or faulty if you get it from the other side of the world
good luck which ever way you go :)

The diesel auto was developed with help from MB when they owned jeep so would be better option to go for in a 4 door unlimited. The main difference besides far lower towing capacity is the load carrying ability. It's around the 550kg mark from memory. This means a fridge(50kg) a b/bar+winch 120kg, a roof rack = bars to support it, 50kg, rear tyre carrier and longer range tank 100kgs==== 320kg loaded without any gear or yourself or a load limit of 220kgs which is 3 smallish blokes or 2 of me:D
Hook up a trailer with a 100kg ball weight and your down to 120kg that you can put in the wrangler. So 1 person a swag and a case of beer!

No part problems with land rover but bugger me if your jeep is stuck in the dealers they can have some pretty long waits for parts particularly crash parts for panel shops if you crash it

Well, today I won. :D
I managed to convince her that a 110 was the way to go. She couldn't believe that it was more comfortable than my triton.
All I have to do now is sell my current car....

Well done! I don't think you'll regret your decision.. in fact I bet you will be fighting with your wife over who gets to drive..
Oh and when you do get it, don't forget the Defender wave! :)

I'm with Leroy I bought a my12 110 and every time I get in it it makes me smile. I work away from home and my wife drives it every day (it's her car now) and she loves it to bits, they just have a classic look that cant be matched, it's suprising how much attention it brings. She's always approached by random people in the supermarket carpark saying what year is that? I want one. I coulnt be happier with my decision nor could my wife, maybe I'm bias but the jeep just dosnt do it for me
