I was at a second hand book shop the other day and grabbed a copy of the Jack reacher novel Die Trying by Lee Child which is the second book in the series (from what I can work out)

I rate the writing somewhere between clive cussler and matthew reilly so thats good but I have a couple of questions.

1. is there any reason to read the novels in series?
2. if you've read more than a couple of the novels, compared to only the other Jack Reacher novels, where does the die trying book fit on a quality/readabiity scale (for example I prefer clive cusslers earlier more cavalier Dirk Pitt novels like raise the titanic, pacific vorted, deep six and night probe to the later ones like Poseidons arrow)

To give you a rough reference

In terms of readability/enjoyment I place Die Trying equally with Poseidons arrow

Hi Dave, you don't really need to read them in any order, the only two from memory that sort of followed where his 3rd and 2nd last book .....I'm trying to read cussler time thief now , but finding a lot of description and not a lot of action, ...which to be honest was how I found the latest Reacher book too...... I have read most of Lee Childs, Jack Reacher, novels. Most are independent of each other. Jack Reacher is almost beyond belief & I cannot reconcile his character being portrayed by Tom Cruise.

I have read many of Clive Cusslers & Mathew Reillys and found Lee Childs to be a better read.

Have you read any of James Lee Bourke? Interesting story lines.

I have read most of the jack reacher novels and most of them are stand alone except the l2nd and 3rd last novels. I found they are so easy to get into. Cant for the life of me believe the chose tom cruise to portray reacher. But hey, ill still go and watch it.

At least Tom Cruise brought Jack Reacher to the world because I nor many people I know had ever heard of Jack Reacher before the furore of Tom Cruise playing the role. Crafty choice, really; the movie would not be getting all the free publicity Cruise in the role has generated.

cool drills but if you had to order the jak reacher books best to worst where in that list would you place die trying.

Just from die trying I would have thought that Ron Perlman (of hellboy nd sons of anarchy) would have been a better choice over cruise. Im going to go see the movie and hope that cruise is in his rainman form.

Dave,i found them all good,SWMBO has just finished 'a wanted man',his latest,so looks like it will be my read over Chrissy.

I can't place any of them in a bad to worse order and i have read them all except the latest one.

As said i can't see how Tom Cruise can be Jack Reacher, will have to wait & see.

But then Cruise is not one of my favourite actors, but that is just me.

I have read all except the latest one, and I would rank all of them pretty much equal, apart from The Visitor (number 4) and The Affair (number 13) which were only half a step behind the others.

I am rather disappointed in the choice of Tom Cruise to play Reacher, doesn't sit well with me at all. Won't stop me watching it, but would have preferred another actor.

Dave, do you have a Kindle? If so pm me.

I've read my way through most of them this past month. The stories are more or less stand alone, however aspects of his background and personal life span the series of books, and make a lot more sense when read in order.
