This happened this morning for the third time, and has got me concerned- definitely not what I had in mind when buying my first ever diesel vehicle. Each time it has happened it has been within the first thirty seconds or so of a drive with a cold engine, i.e. after being parked overnight. The engine starts to surge then loses power or cuts out. Seems fine after restarting. My impression is that it is an electrical fuel system or ECU problem. If anyone can shed any light on this or point me to a known issue that needs addressing, I would be grateful.

What is the outside air temp, does it misfire when at idle or when you pull off? What do the revs surge too? A little bit more info would be good in helping us get to the bottom of your issue.:BigThumb:

Each time it has happened, ambient temp has been mild, low to mid teens. It starts off idling okay but I notice a misfire as I drive off. Revs don't increase, perhaps spluttering would be a better description than surging. Each time it has been on fairly flat ground and sedately going up through the gears, not under hard throttle.

Mabey try warming up the engine before driving off, with every car I've ever owned I don't move the car till the temp gauge does, unless its just to reverse the disco to the boat trailer then it sits there to warm up while I'm getting the boat and trailer ready. I'm not super experienced with diesels so I'm really not sure if it will help or not

Not sure if this is the same or not, mine did stall, but I put it down to my lack of driving a manual for the last 20 or so years.
I had an issue where at the lights I noticed it "sounded" like it was running rough, but couldn't actually feel it. They replaced the ECU and then had to do the same with all the injectors, as they couldn't get the new unit to read them. this was done at the first 10k service.
Haven't had any issues since.

My 08/09 SVX starts and runs fine and pulls the boat up out of my drive at -6 in Canberra.

Suggest that there is probably a Temp sensor or ECU problem. Engine doesn't know what to do. Unless you can find one of the wizards on here with the right clobber, you'll need to get a dealer to put his box on it.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies, been away from the computer the last couple of days. I'll be getting the vehicle serviced by a dealer in about another thousand k's, first service since I bought it so wanting to ensure all recalls have been completed etc. Will get them to see if they can pull any fault codes.

My Puma used to run furry after starting for 3-5min. then no problems, I had a strange intermittent noise change in the induction that I got the dealer to look at. They said they made some changes to the tune and all was good. No actual cause stated. The change in induction noise never re appeared but the furry area in the rev band continued until I sold the vehicle. It occurred between idle and approximately 1200-1500rpm when cold. It never stalled or lost power and I assumed it to be the E.G.R. People with far more knowledge re E.G.R. problems on Puma engines will be a far better source of information than I, but our TD5 without one thus far is trouble free motoring. Perhaps a word with Drover re his tune would be worthwhile, he seems to have his Puma well sorted.
