I have been tracing the history of the first 1948 vehicles to Western Australia as I am currently recommissioning R860583. I have come accross these photos of the sister vehicle to my 48, R860585.

This vehicle has dissappeared into WA's outback. It may have been scrapped, sent to another state or still out there somewhere. Anyway here are some nice early pics of an original 48 hard at work.

Cheers,
Andy.

Thanks for those photo's, I am wondering about the Rover car is that a P2?
The Rover's design looks very dated compared to both the Land Rover and the Holden.

I hope you can trace down R860585, here's hoping.

I think it is a P3 being post war although there is little visual difference between them,

Cheers Charlie

Fabulous photos! I used to go to school in Perth before we moved to Kalgoorlie! A life time ago now...

Looks like a young, nude Darth Vader in that first photo. His early association with Land Rovers could explain his bad temper :-)

Great photos and have seen them before, as I know who one of the young fellas is.

Not sure how these ended up in your hands, but these photos were sent to me from a guy currently renting a cabin on my property. He is the young boy in the photo and his name is Peter Whittle. His dad was a dairy farmer in Margaret river WA and was also the local Land Rover agent. He is still alive and I may be able to get some contact details for him if you want to try to contact him.

Wow, I just posted on this forum (Land Rover Timeline) about my dad telling the story of importing the first land rover into WA (possibly) and did a Google search and found this on the very same site! This is my dad (B.C. Whittle), and yes Peter Whittle (mentioned below) is a step-brother. The other kids are David, Eric, Rod and Penny (Rod and Eric still live in Margaret River). I would love to get a hold of the original (full resolution) photos, not sure where they could have come from?

That very man displaying those cars (B.C. Whittle - my Dad) gave me my first car which was a hand-me-down 1969 Rover 2000. That was in 1986, which he replaced with his last Rover, a 1986? Rover 3500 V8 in British Racing Green with Gold stripes, loved that car as a teenager, seemed very sporty. I always thought there was something wrong with it though as on the few occasions I was allowed to drive it I could not quite believe a V8 was so sluggish.

Update - We have located R860585, purchased it and brought it back to Perth.

It's in remarkably original condition and rust free.

It will be restored once there's room in the shed and funds in the bank.

Andy.

I would say defiantly a P3 has the wider body also on flip out vents inside of bonnet.
I love old original photo's of old Land Rovers.

Yup that Andy's ugly mug shot. Not sure it is the 80" being talked about. Andy sniffs out new finds from obscure locations all over!
