View Full Version : M & S Lights again

It's not even new year and Charlie's decided it was time for a bit of M & S flashing.

I was down at the shops (Veeeery hot today, 39 deg atm), hopped in to go home and on start-up I got a short horn beep. Selected reverse and the M& S lights, along with dash LCD gear indicator and red gear lever shift lights started flashing.

Ouch I thought as I am planning to head south with the caravan to Albany on the 3rd and most mechanics/spares places are closed till next week.

Crawled home in limp mode and put the Nanocom on with the following codes logged:

NANOCOM - D2AGB.APP - DISCOII AUTO GEARBOX fault file
CODE P1843 - CAN TIMEOUT MONITORING
CODE P1842 - CAN LEVEL MONITORING

I've cleared the errors and have done a couple more shopping runs with no reappearance. Gut feel, with out any solid evidence, given the hot day and short trips, is that either the battery voltage may have dropped just enough to trip the codes, or that the XYZ switch sealing may be starting to go. Once it is cooler this evening I'll crawl in underneath and check the XYZ connector plugs.

So is there anything else I should be looking at/checking?

Happy new year!

Cheers

Steve

Recent discussions with allfourx4 indicate that CAN faults can be a mis signal at ecu connector, due to oil. 5 min checkto prove it.CAN wires are at bottom of ecu red connector; gravity and movement will put the oil here.

Hi bsperka

Thanks for that. I hadn't thought to check there.

If I do find any oil there though, my mechanic will be doing a warranty job as he replaced the injector loom only 6 months ago :)

Up to you, but unless you replaced all the wiring from ecu to engine, then the oil will come out for a long time. Some people take the harness from engime to ecu off and let it 'drain' for awhile ( eg days) Consider this though. If you have a 2004 model then it's been going in for at least 8 yrs.

If you do find oil in the red conector clean it and remove the orange seal ring for a while to allow the oil to drain more freely from the engine harness.

Have you rerouted the aircon drain hoses?:D

Thanks all for your replies

I had a closer look last night and underneath looked reasonably OK/clean. No damage to the wiring either where it passed over the back of the transmission, however the heat shielding has some light abrasion so I'll keep a watch on that. Air cond drains haven't been extended Greg, so that will be a job for another day, when I have time to drop the exhaust to get in there.

Checked the BCU as well and YES there was a small amount of oil, so your last post bsperka was correct, as only the engine loom was replaced recently. It therefore appears that there is still some residual oil in the ECU section. Anyway I gave it a good drench with contact cleaner, including removing the rubber seal, let it dry for an hour or so and put it all back together. All OK on the test run this morning.

I'll monitor it and see how it goes, but if there is still oil coming through I'll be having a chat with the mechanic when I get back from down south.

A can of contact cleaner is also being added to the tool box as this is the second time in as many months I have had need of it. Most useful stuff!

Thanks again for your help guys.

Cheers

Hi Rok_Dr
Did you manage to fix the problem? mine is now doing the same thing but the mechanic is unable to find the problem as we speek

Hi Saxon

Touch wood I haven't had a reoccurrence. After cleaning the ecu plug and resetting the error codes I did 1600km in January pulling the van around the south west on some pretty torrid days with no problems.

So in my case it seems that it was a small amount of residual oil at the orange ecu plug that caused the issue. Are you getting the same error codes?

Is it a Td5 ? If so it is possible to push a tube into the existing AC drains to extend them. Clark Rubber clear plastic I can check the size if you need it

The codes Rok Dr posted relate specifically to loss of communication between ECU and the EAT ECU, so the trouble is going to be on the CANBUS lines between the two.

The P1842 is basically a follow-on fault from the loss of communications, and indicates that the signals being sent between the two ecu's.

I've attached the P1843 diagnostic flow only as the P1842 will clear up when you solve the underlying problem.

Hi Ollie,

Any any chance you could post the size needed? It's on my list of things to do.

Cheers

Diverting the aircon drains is easy as! No need to remove exhaust or anything.
I simply used clear beverage tube 10-12 mm diameter and pushed it up into the drain spigots about 25 mm or so and tied the bottoms off on the Transmission pipes with cable ties (auto obviously).
They don`t need to be very precise.I`ve had this in place for years and it works fine.
Most of the water comes down the centre of the tube, but even if it doesn`t the natural tendency of the water is to track down the pipes either inside or along the outside and follow the direction of the pipes and away from the XY switch on one side and the Cardon joint on the other.
Works really well.

Hi Turbo Couple of photos The tube measures 13.2 mm

2nd attempt
1/2" (13.2mm) OD 1.6mm Wall Clear plastic tube from Clark Rubber good spec'
Pushed into the existing drains approx' 30mm the second still had the non return on the end, it pulled off easily. The photos are 2 x drivers side then 2 x passenger side. It was done a year ago.
If you use the arm with two elbows you should be good
