Happy New Year all.
A friend of mine has a 2002 TD5 defender 110 and he remapped his ECU a couple of months ago. Now his engine screams when it's under load or climbing a hill. I have not heard the noise myself as he is a little worried of what might happen should he purposefully bring it on. My thoughts are that it may have put the injector pump under stress as I believe they are mechanical but I am not too sure of it's workings and what sort of noise if any would they be capable of producing under stress, load and wear. I am wondering if any others out there have had any similar occurrences. Any help is welcome.

Thanks

G'day, happy new year, I have a D2 TD5 and have had the same problem. If it is a high pitched scream it could be the bolts on the exhaust manifold either loose or snapped. The 2 end bolts are proneto giving way. Mine had the same problem within 3 months and had to get a larger size bolt put in.
If you check the 2 end bolts this wil give you an indication if this is the problem.
Hope this helps

Hi D2D, the most likely cause of the sceaming noise will be the exhaust manifold having warped, particularly if it has only occurred since the CPU re-map. They tend to warp at the best of times and the extra heat associated with the extra performance will bring it on sooner. Check to see if there are any black marks around the exhausr manifold to block join. You may need to take off some bits to get a clear view of this area. Alternatively, use the length of hose trick to see if the noise can be located that way. If it turns out to be this problem, you will need to remove the manifold and have it machined flat. There are several threads on this and things to do to reduce the chance of it happening again. Warping is usually associated with broken manifold studs. Cheers, 130man.

Or the viscous fan hub has seized. The fan then runs at engine rpm. And that makes a racket..

If the "screaming" noise sounds like a slipping fan belt then 130man's diagnosis is probably correct. The TD5 doesn't have an injector pump as such - each injector assembly acts as the hi pressure pump.

If it is the exhaust manifold it will occur again.

If you are going to replace studs see if you can go up one size this seems to fix it.

Another remedy is to remove some of the casting in between the exhaust outlets.

Another is to jet coat the manifold this helps as it helps to dissapate the heat quicker.

This is a common problem on the TD5 D2's as well.

Should be heaps on this site about it if you do a search.

Cheers

Thanks guys for the replies, I will let the guy know and the idea of using the hose, brilliant, never used one myself, used the ear to the screwdriver trick but not the hose.

Cheers,

Thanks Kremlin, it's great to here your thoughts and experiences on this matter and I will pass it on to the owner. He has informed me he is taking it to a Land Rover mechanic but it will help him if he can get a handle on the problem so he knows what he is up for in repair and costs.

Hi guy,
Well, don't I feel like a duffer, I heard the noise and he was worried for nothing. It was only his viscous fan working overtime with the ECU re-map. Just the whirring of the air. So you can imagine his relief. Even though it seemed a waste of time for you guys to be bothered with, I'm glad I put it out there because I learnt of so many other potential problems that can hinder these amazing beasts.

Thank you all for the help
Much appreciated
