Well they've been around for a month or so now, annoying the animals & humans, but I don't think we've ever had them this bad. How's everyone else going with them. I'd hate to think what they're like up Fraser!!! Just read that the male fly eats fruit & nectar while it's the female that puts in the bloodsucking bite! Why does this sound familiar :wasntme:

Yep, I've been recently seen to suddenly leap about in a frenzy with my arms flapping about when working outside or in the shed. Hate them:mad:!

Starting to see/feel the odd one down this way too.

Never seen them here before that in 30+ years.

Marsh Flies.....or March Flies

No shortage of them on Teewah Beach last week, on a good note there were no sand flies or mozzies

None so far this year here, but last year there seemed to be loads. Got a number of bites when in or around the pool. :(

Weeds, I thought the same thing for years that they were the same pest, but they're not. There are two distinct families. I found it on our good friend Google.

At least march flies generally do not bite through clothes and when they are whacked it is the end.
When in Africa I was bitten by tsetse flies through clothing and when I whacked them they fell to the ground and then got back up to have another go. It was very satisfying to step on them and hear them go 'pop' as they are tough little blighters.

Can't stand em either and you really have to get the timing right when allowing them to settle before you whack em.
They look pretty nasty close up too and no wonder they hurt when you see what they suck your blood with :o

Bucket loads of the mongrels up the bush [N/E Vic] this afternoon. They drove my dog insane so this will be her last trip out there until the first frost in April kills them.

Certainly among the most annoying of God's fine creations. The blighters seem to be attracted to dark colours, and probably movement as well. Commercial traps for March flies (and Tsetse flies) are made with black and blue material.
In the bush I wear light clothing and dark boots. When sitting quiet the flies gather harmlessly on my boots where they can be conveniently swatted.
