Skylander Giants

Does anyone play or have kids that play Skylander giants?
Do you need to unlock the giants or should they be able to be active from the start?
My son just bought the skylanders Giants pack for the Wii but the giant does not work when you put it on the portal.

if you bought the pack that doesnt have the game it wont work.

there are 3 pack types, with 3 different player character options

Starter packs, these have the game, the portal and come with 1 or 3 characters.

Portal packs, these have the game and come with one or 3 characters

Character packs these have one or 3 characters

The character packs come in 3 flavors
Singles, you get one character (Giant/normal in light up or standard varient) some are limited editions others are stock

Triples, for stand alone character packs they are normally 3 generic characters For combo packs its either 1 giant and 2 normals or 3 normals and one of those will be a limited edition

spyros adventure figures will work in skylander giants and some of the skylander giants normal figurines (the ones that exist in the spyros adventure world) will work in the original game so you can level them up prior to starting the giants game if you so wish. (the ones that work in the original game are a little hit and miss depending on which platform and which version of the game you have, Im told that its also available as downloadable content)

My son bought a pack that had the game, portal, and 3 characters one which was a giant.
After a bit of internet search it appeared to me that the giant should work from word go. Took the game back and exchanged for a new one and all characters worked - was a faulty giant in the end. Turned out that the levels were saved on the machine but all the character upgrades were lost as these are saved to the character and not the console.
