I am travelling to Tassie for a couple of months towing a small van and would like suggestions on what spares to take for the vehicle. Leaving from Brisbane.

Try here for starters:

Do a search for D2 spares using the "Google Custom Search" function below. There is lots of information on this subject.

Be warned if you take some of the spare parts and tools threads seriously you'll need to tow a trailer behind your van to carry the "bare essentials".
I'd personally focus on doing preventative maintenance rather than loading up with spares. If the hoses in the cooling system are over 100K km old think very seriously about replacing them all. Brake hoses have a recommended service life of 6 years so it's also worth thinking about refreshing if they haven't been done.
Apart from that the biggest essential if you aren't going too remote is the top level roadside assist coverage from your local motoring association: RACQ Ultimate | Membership | RACQ (http://www.racq.com.au/membership/racq_ultimate)

As pPaul says , Preventive is the way to go! Much nicer and easier to replace stuff in your own workshop with a clean dry cool environment than on the side of the Birdsville track in the dust and heat and FLIES:D If its rubber and carries fluids replace it as a matter of course. If you going to carry it any way might as well carry it in the proper place! :)
Cheers Scott
