I went for a drive over weekend and got stuck up hill and noticed I only had drive from 1 front wheel and nothing at all from the rear, any ideas.:( Tried Hi and Low range and diff lock but no change, no noises were heard and could still drive home and around no with no trouble. can spin both rear wheels and will not spin front when up on stands, used to be able to spin rear wheels together and front would spin as well.

Broken rear axle?

Broken rear axle?

Agreed, and easy to check. Pull your rear axles - I think you'll find a bit stays behind in the diff...

Oh, and welcome to the forum. If you ask around here (in the markets section) I'm sure someone would have a set of axles they would part with for a fair price.

Cheers - Gav

Hi Dave, If I can spin both wheels on rear and it moves The opposite wheel this means the axles are ok and if I spin both at the same time and the tailshaft spins this means diff is ok, so might be something in transfer case?

Pull the hand brake on and get some one to stop the other wheel and try again.
There was a member with a similar thing on one of our trips.
It wasn't till he hit the harder train till it showed up also.
It drove OK but had a broken axle in the rear.

And welcome to AULRO :)

Pinchy, if you hunt on here, you'll find that there's a number of similar tales, and how Rover axles "are made of cheese". It's probably preferable to have the drivetrain break a $100 axle, rather than a $1000 transfer case!

It'll take you an hour to remove and check both axles. It's worth checking the easy to get to stuff first than go straight for the biggie.

Then you would have to have been in diff lock all the time for it to even move off you drive if there was no power to the wheels on the rear.

Remember technically land rovers are only one wheel drive. If you have one wheel hanging in the air all the drive will go that wheel you will go no where. And when in diff lock is only two wheel drive if you cross axle and have two wheels in the air ( one on each axle ) then you are also not going anywhere.

Need diff lockers to make them really 4 wheel drive.

Try engaging the centre diff lock :).

Try engaging the centre diff lock :).

That's what my immediate thought was...

Don't make assumptions guys. Make sure you cover the basics before launching in with the broken axle / knackered diff theories. ;)

Try engaging the centre diff lock :).

And actually test it is engaging when you think it is!

My second D1 was an example of this one, previous owner hadn't used it very much, and as such when pushed across to lock it went far enough to get the light on the dash, but not actually engage the CDL. Good clean and lubrication of linkages and clean out of crud, it actually worked again!

Start by checking the simple things :)

Thanks for all of your input guys I really appreciate it, will go and clean up CDL selector and try using it and see how we go! Must say I am impressed where it has gone so far in One wheel drive LOL.

That one wheel drive thing is a trick some off road driving instructors do

Ask people how many wheel drive the land rovers are and they say 4 wheel drive so you jack a wheel up and drive and therefore the car goes no where. And then you ask again how many wheel drive they are.
They normally say you need the CDL and that will make it 4 wheel drive so you then jack up an other wheel on the opposite axel and engage CDL and then drive the car and show that the car still won't move and ask again how many wheels are driving the car

Just a basic lesson in understanding the four wheel drive systems and diffs of a land rover.

Not just landies, ANY "4wd" unless it has lockers fitted or independent traction aids are the same, Patrools , Tojos, Pusluxs, Cross them up and you go nowhere! Thats the idea of longer susp travel, try and keep them round black thingies in contact with mother earth! :D

I am not a clairvoyant - Pinchy has also posted on another forum and after a couple of posts it came out that he cannot activate his CDL from the lever and did not have the CDL engaged. He can activate CDL from the tfr case but hadn't - he needs to investigate the lever/linkage issues.
