Long time no post, 2001 Td5 defender, 250 on the clock, been good apart from a clutch and a fuel pump .. love her until yesterday.

Aircon stopped working, fuse on the in cabin blower (20amp) went and all went silent, new fuse and it worked fine, but no cold air.

Checked that there was gas, then checked the dryer pressure sensor by shorting out the wires (so the compressor starts) and bam it melted my test wire in 2.1 seconds.

So I am guessing the electric / magnetic thingamajig in the compressor is stuffed. The bearings seem fine, it runs true and makes no noise, it just does not engage.

Any ideas ? Can I replace that part of the compressor, or ?

Thanks for your help!

Clutch can be replaced.

What compressor/model ?

I will get some pics and details tomorrow for you, is it a pully off / replace kinda deal, or compressor out ?

Home doable or off to Aircon guy ?

Thanks Rick,

I've done them in situ but it was a few years ago and IIRC I had to fab up a puller. (I try and avoid car/truck/tractor a/c like the plague :D)

It does depend on make/model.
