My balls are pitted.....what shall I do.......?

I need to replace my swivel hub bearings......they are running on rust......
But I noticed that the swivel balls have a bit of rust and pitting on them......

I need to get parts before I pull it all apart......it's been a while since ive pulled one apart.......

I was wondering if anyone could let me know what I should order......

I may as well pull the ball off and do the swivel hub seal.......but not too sure what to do with the ball surface......

And what Is the best grease.....?


It's an '03 fender........td5 with rover diffs.........

You can get new teflon swivel balls from the UK these days, not sure if they are any good but repairing them doesn't seem to be a cost/time effective procedure.

Why not buy a complete swivel kit which includes the ball as everything sounds cactus.

I bought mine locally from an on-line supplier supplier in Ballarat.

You can buy kits with all of the bearings, seals and gaskets that you need to do the job and swivels can be bought separately. British Offroad and Roverparts sell them amongst others. Swivel rebuild kits I think they are called.

They also sell the one shot swivel grease mix to suit.

I pulled the inner seal in the stub axle and run 90 gear oil in the hubs and bearings. No leaks at all so far...

What he said - the seals only need a smooth surface to provide a seal. My 101 balls which are welded to the axle housing were pitted - I removed the corrosion and cleaned them up and filled the little pits with epoxy steel and then sanded smooth and polished the balls - stopped the leaking and has not been an issue - just make sure the area to be glued is spotless.

I can clean and smooth out the balls.....but was only worried how it was gonna seal if the surface wasn't perfect.....,or if the chrome was removed.....

If it works.....then I'll clean them up and fit new seals......but I'm not too sure about running them in oil.......I got a feeling they will leak......especially after a mud puddle or two......


But....what I will do.....is put a little oil in every now and then......they have never been touched or checked since new......and they have lasted till now.....

why not pull the seal in the axle housing and the one in the stub axle and let the oil go right through and lube the lot :)

I usually leave the axle seal in between the diff and the swivel ball as it prevents cross contamination. welll it slows it down which makes diagnosing whats letting water in when you ford it through the slops.
