View Full Version : Intermittent Starting

I have a 2006 Disco3.
For quite some time now I have been getting intermittent problems with starting the car which I suspect may be connected with the immobiliser.
Usually the car will start in the mornings but if I drive a short distance and leave it for 15 minutes or longer it often refuses to start. It will turn over but not start. If I try cranking it for to long an error msg comes on telling me special programmes have been switched off.
Sometimes I have to lock it and go for a cup of tea for half an hour and when I come back sometimes it will start sometimes not. Or I have to connect my jump start pack for a few minutes and then it normally starts.
A Landrover tech once told me that he has heard of these cars going to sleep and forgetting to wake up when requested to do so by the key fob or key? Any one else heard of this or come across this problem. It is so frustrating as I have to say a small prayer everytime I get in my car in the hope that it will start!
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds suspiciously like the problem I had in my 2006 D3. Cured by a new starter motor. If it is getting more frequent I'd be getting it checked.

I'd first eliminate a low voltage condition - either the battery, alternator or both being the problem. Low(er) voltages as you unsuccessfully crank the engine may cause various systems to go into a fault condition.

Cheers,

Gordon

Sorry, didn't see the bit about it cranking. Mine wasn't trying to turn over at all on occasions. Start with the battery. The source of most D3/4 electrical gremlins.

V6 petrol.
When i first had the problem i changed the battery which helped for a short while but it came back after a few weeks or so.

Is there a larger capacity battery than the standard one that will fit my car? Maybe that would eliminate the problem?
