Flushing old diesel from VE injection pump ?

Hi,

After 13 months working in the car (not finished yet...) this afternoon I turned the key again, after all this time.

Engine started at the first attempt, but two seconds later the engine started to run irregulary and shortly after (another two seconds) stopped running.

To shorten the story, while priming the injection pump I noticed that the diesel poping out had a strange smell, like paint thinner. I put some in a bottle, and I discovered that it was yellow.

So now I have a injection pump full of ancient diesel with an amazing bacteria grow on it. I would like to know if there is an optimum procedure to flush the pump on-site, apart from the obvious "fill with fresh diesel and turn the key".

crack the injector lines at the injectors and crank it over on the key.

The fact that it ran originally on the old stuff then stopped probably means that you have an airlock.

Dose the fuel tank with some BC-250 bleed up the fuel system, recheck the fuel control connections and go again.

Thank you for the advice. I'll go to SCA (with the pushbike, BTW :)) to see if I find some BC-250 there (or other bacteria-killer like this). Another delay in the project.

I was checking the calendar... and I bought that old diesel in Sep. 2011, so a long time ago. It might have been bio-diesel stuff, as I refuelled in France and I wasn't familiar with the diesel varieties there.

You are absolutely right about the airlock. The engine actually stopped because the secondary solenoid (anti theft cut-off valve) was disconnected (well, connected to a poor ground).

I'm a bit suspicious about the timing belt (changed few weeks ago), but I find hard to believe that it jumped several teeth having the right tension. And no, it wasn't packed in a blue box...



Let's flush first and then see what happens.

Get a pela oil extrator... from Witworths (marine supplies)
you crack the fuel return line at the fuel filter and suck fresh diesel through and effectivly prime the system.

Then you can use the Pela to suck the oil out through the dip stick tube at oil changes - no more messy oil spills or burnt hands.
