View Full Version : My Samoyed friend just died - I'm Devastated.

I can't believe it :(

My wife just phoned me in tears...

My beautiful friend of 9 1/2 years has just suddenly died [bawl]

She had a sore back leg for a few days and was booked to go see her friend (and I mean friend) the Vet tomorrow.

I am told she was bounding around this morning (on my side of the bed) happy - I'm guessing looking for me... (I'm currently away at the Mine).

And then wandered outside and lay down in her favourite cool spot on the concrete..

Now she will never wake up :BigCry:

She was the most wonderful, gentle friend and family member, playful and caring.

I'm absolutely devastated...

I will post pictures when I get home and can access them...

But for now, I'm just at a loss....

I'm really sorry to hear Mike and know how you're feeling.

We only have them on loan for a very short time, but their influence is immense.

I still miss my best mate, we were lucky and had her for fourteen years.
She's been gone two years now and we still miss the physical presence, but have many, many wonderful memories.

She would've felt your love regardless of the distance, and not that it helps or will diminish the pain you are feeling ATM it will eventually dissipate.

Sorry to hear that, Mike. They really do become one of the family - they're non-judgemental and happy to see you. It's awful when they go.

Sorry mate! I lost my best mate (a Golden Retriever) a couple of years ago to cancer - in under a week. I still miss her.

Reflect back on all the good memories and celebrate them. Dogs really make life better. :)

That's pretty rough Tombie. Dogs have a way of being many things in your life, friend, protector, clown, and forever pleased to see you.

Every night I get home from work and the dog meets me excited as ever at the top step, I'm always reminded of the joke "If you lock your dog and your wife in the boot of the car, which one would be pleased to see you when you open the boot again?"

Sorry to hear, i to know the pain. Dont leave it to long befor getting another dog as it will hurt more and more and its "not a home with out a dog".
I left it 6 months befor getting another as no new dog was good enough to fill the place left behind- all that did was make it worse. just my 2c....

Sad news, Mate.

Went thru a similar thing ourselves a couple of weeks ago.

Still strange not having her around.

She was a lovely girl, that I had the pleasure of meeting.

Our thoughts are with you & Emma.

Very sad to hear. I've had several dogs, they all become such a big part of our lives, a real part of our families. Anyone who doesn't view them that way shouldn't have one. It's a real shame mate.

Ah Mike, so sorry to hear it. I lost one of mine last year to a snake - her second bite and we weren't home to be with her. They are great, loving and loyal mates and their memory stays with you. Hopefully soon it will be all the good memories and not just the one of loss. We still have our other 2 - one of them has survived 2 bites so far and cant have another as apparently they develop an allergy to the horse serum thats a part of the antidote. So our Charlie is on borrowed time cos he just hates snakes and unfortunately cant help but pick on the big ones that he cant break their back when he picks them up and shakes them. You just have to love them and enjoy them while they are in your lives.

Sad news Mike, hear your pain.

My German Shep at 9 was bounding around fitter than ever, got up one morning 4 weeks ago and she was not well, died before 10 that day, lying in her favorite spot before vet appointment, just lay down and went to sleep poor thing. Heart failure took her within couple hours of first signs… Looks like our 5yo Daughter caught the last pic while playing with a camera the previous night.

Thanks for sharing Tombie. Great looking dog; at least it sounds like a fairly quick departure. My border collie is about the same age and starting to slow down.:(

Dogs great friends, they dont judge you, just unconditional love.

Like mentioned, get another.

Sorry to hear that mate, we have always had dogs and the saddest moment I had was to gather our 14 year old poodle up off the road after he was killed by a car and bury him in the backyard, the whole family was crying as I buried him. that was almost twenty years ago. You never forget a good doggy friend do you!!:(

We have had a couple of lovely pooches since and this is one of our two current dogs, Bindi, she is a cattle dog cross and don't you just love those big eyes!!:D she has just turned seven years old.:D

I guess, really you only have them for a short time and then they are gone!!

Feeling your pain Mike . We had to have our dog put down just before Christmas. i was interstate with work at the time. He was a healer x rotti and nearly 13. We miss him but enjoy talking about the funny things he would do. He would put on a big tough boy show to any strangers that came by the house... and he was scary. I used to have fun responding to his show at night time before he could work out who it was. he would run away down the drive leaving a trail of wee behind him. lol

Sorry to hear that Mate My thoughts are with you. In all the years Ive had them they are all part of the family. Even though mine are working dogs the loss when they go is something that you can never forget . Each has their own personality and can never be replaced .

Im sorry :( They are such an integral part of some of our lives. 9 seems young but they are a big dog, and its been so hot

Somehow initially no dog seems good enough to replace the one you lost until you come to the realization that its not about 'replacement' but enrichment they are all different little personalities. And if you happen to rehome a dog from the RSPCA or other rescue you are doubling the benefit.

I hope you and your family always remember the loved one you lost, and are able to give love again to another that is waiting especially to give its love to you

Mike and Family, and the others that have recently lost their little Mates:
Cherish the Love and Companionship and then share some more with another from Death-row.
Our little girl disappeared a year and a half ago, during a period when a number of other little dogs were turning up torn to pieces, apparantly bait dogs for the dog-fighters :(
Fortunately she turned up safe and sound thanks to some other Dog lovers who kept her safe. :)
BUT, for those ferw days, I was sure she was gone in a terrible way.

So I have been were you are now, but thankfully given a reprieve.

Off to take my mate for the walk I promised her 3 days ago.
All the best, Dave.

They are wonderfull loyal companions and we get so attached to them, and they to us. Sadly they do not have the same life span as we do.
It always hurts when we have to say goodbye to them!

so sorry for your loss :( RIP beautiful samoyed. They are such a big part of us, fill our hearts up, and the scale of sorrow we all feel when they are called back to rainbow bridge is a measure of just how much they mean to us. This poem will probably make you cry, but also soothing at the same time. Someone passed it on to me once, I do not know who wrote it but here you go.
LAST NIGHT

I stood by your bed last night,
I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying,
You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly
as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you,
I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast,
I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times,
your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today,
Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels,
I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today,
You tend it with such care.
I want to re-assure you,
that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house,
as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you,
I smiled and said " it's me."

You looked so very tired,
and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know,
that I was standing there.

It's possible for me,
to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty,
"I never went away."

You sat there very quietly,
then smiled, I think you knew...
In the stillness of that evening,
I was very close to you.

The day is over...
I smile and watch you yawning
and say "good-night, God bless,
I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you
to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you
and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you,
there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out...
then come home to be with me.

If there's anything you can take comfort in Tombie, it's that she died in her favourite spot with those that clearly loved her to bits, as opposed to staring down some headlights on a cold highway :(

Sorry to hear it Tombie, never an easy time. We lost Rex in October - every time someone posts up about the loss of their friend I am put right back there.

It's the only bad thing about having a pet - they are not around long enough.

Epic_Dragon, touching poem you posted - not good for maintaining ones composure!

Sorry to hear of your loss Tombie, Had a few go in recent years myself well before their time and it still hurts now.

We have a Boxer girl (8) and a Border Collie boy (14 months) now and I doubt we will get another Pet dog when the old girl passes.

I grew up with Boxers and love em to bits but they are not what they used to be sadly.

To make you smile though, heres a pic of my missus's Chest puppies....

Thats terrible mate and sorry for your loss, at least she knew love up to the end unlike a lot pets that get badly neglected or worse.
I took the family into the city to see the xmas decorations the night before NYE and we came across what i assume what the Samoyed owners/breeders club, there were about 15 or so beautiful white dogs as well as a couple of puppies - very cute.

Hey Mike.
Very sorry for your loss mate. We had two Maltese terriers until recently. Both nearly 15. I cried like a baby when I had to burry Missy. Now Buffy howls all the time until we bring her inside with us. She misses her old friend. Buff is now 15. Not looking forward till that day. So we are thinking of you mate and your family.

Well who knew. I certainly didn't know you had a Samoyed. We too have a big white lump of fur, Oskar, as he is known when behaving. I remember sitting in a pub up in the mountains in New Zealand with the family, and the owner's Sammy strolled through the bar, sat down and just lapped up the attention from the kids. That was the deal breaker for us and a couple of months later after finding a breeder, we had the Big O. He's seven now, so getting on, but wouldn't trade him for all the tea.

Cheers and condolences
Nick

Yeah it made me cry reading the poem too. Glad you liked it as well though. It is hard when they go :( I have it coming up with one of my horses, he is 25, turns 26 later this year. I have owned him for about 16 years now. Arthritis is getting pretty bad so I will have to make the choice for him. I dont remember life without him as was young when got him. To think of living in a world where he is not by my side kills me. But I cannot keep him around because of selfish reasons, best thing one can do is set their loved 4 legged free in the end.
Thinking of you and your family in this tough time. The sudden shock of the unexpected makes it a lot harder too :(
