A mate and I are down from Queensland exploring around the blue mountains. We have been here a few dAys doing some 4wd tracks but nothing really difficult. All of a sudden when driving on a bitumen road we lost all drive. We had to walk to caper tree and called nrma and had the car tilt trayed to lithcow. I have racq ultimate so they will return the car to Queensland. I just rebuilt the whole gearbox with me bearings and sin crows and new flywheel and clutch and rebuilt the transfer case overhauled as well. This was because the Fifth gear destroyed itself. Question is what's gone wrong? It has no drive in any gear but the clutch feels normal , the gearbox selects normally , and its going in to low and high normally. It makes a terrible noise when a gear is selected that sounds like its from the bell housing but no drive? Any ideas?

Did you smell any clutch smells? Have you shredded the clutch?
Or possibly broken the transfer input gear splines or snapped the centre diff. Try selecting the diff lock and see if you regain drive. If no go you could remove the clutch slave cylinder and check for clutch debris. If that's all fine drop the transfer case oil and check for broken bits/contaminated oil.
Can't think of anything else.
Cheers
Nino.

when you get back to the car take the pto cover and bearing/drivegear out of the transfer case[takes only a few minutes] and start the car running in gear, if the out put shaft of the gearbox is turning then the fault is in the transfer case, you will also be able to see the splines.
Ive had this happen to two friends and it turned out to be the transfer gear lever accidently knocked into neutral-easy fix

No clutch smells. Definitely not just jumped out of gear, I am Thinking something with the clutch or mainshaft has sheared. Looking at. Ashcroft site they say its common.

On the way back to Queensland now minus the defender, thank Christ for racq ultra! May be weeks before it gets back though. Didn't have a chance to look at it before we left as they arranged transport home pretty quick for us via train.
