Central locking

Hi guys,

Quick question about central locking on Disco 1. A few of the locks have stopped working so i went out and bought a replacement set from Auto1. Just a generic set, but a friend asked me if the were a solenoid actuator or motor locks. Question is, if l just replaqce the actuators is it going to matter if they are different or should l replace the lot including the control unit as well? If l have to replace the control unit as well, then does anyone know where it is located?

I have no idea whether mine is factory fitted or not, but if they're the same as mine they're solenoid actuators. You can tell by the way they go up and down and the sound they make. A single short jerk up or down is a solenoid. If they "wind" up and down they're motor driven. A solenoid is either UP or DOWN, nothing in between. A motor winds it up or down over a short period of time.

A stab in the dark..... I would say you can straight swap the actuators. All the correct wires would be available, hopefully the same plugs. The drivers door is probably different to the rest - or at least wired differently as that is the "control" actuator. I.E. You have to move that lock for the other doors to follow suit.

Now we wait for verification by someone more qualified. :D

Actuators are solenoid, pretty much identical with generics (I've swapped my rear door and drivers doors with generics) - note that the drivers door is the master solenoid that triggers the others/
Hopefully that will cure your problems, worth checking the little spiral coil springs in the mechanisms - if they fail the lock buttons don't pop back up, but there's a guy on Ebay who does the springs
As far as the controller is concerned in my 97 model its on the side of the passengers footwell (green box) - though there may be more electronics hidden elsewhere

I done mine recently using Jaycar generic ones and had no problem very straight forward but:

You will break some/alot of door trim clips in the process, so do youself a favour and get some in before you start as I had a hell of a time getting them also if you are doing the rear cargo door, the door trim clips are different to the other doors.
