My computer is giving me grief. Besides a heap of problems it is now beeping three times on bootup. According to the internet this indicates a "base 64k ram failure". What does this mean and how can I fix it? Jim

Start out by resetting the BIOS. There is a short circuit jumper on the motherboard that will do this, or maybe try pulling the battery out for a minute or two.

The reset jumper will be shown in your motherboard handbook (if you have one) or you can download a PDF of the manual from the manufacturer's website (usually).

See if that gets you any further.

Cheers

its likely you have a "core" system problem, like ram, cpu or mobo.

id start with ram, how many sticks do you have in there ? can you take any out, and try each one individually,

one may have failed, or there also may be something not plugged in properly.

the other way to reset your bios thats easier is to find the silver battery on the motherboard and take it out, unplug from power first then press power button while plug out and battery out. nothing should happen. then put it all back together.

try reseating the ram and video card.

No need to reset the bios. The first 64k of RAM is essential for boot-up - a "base 64k ram failure" is more than likely a chip failure in that first 64k. As suggested, try reseating the RAM in it's slots, or better still, swap out the sick of RAM in the first slot for another.

Thanks to all my learned friends! It seems that the first stick of ram has a problem. Unplugged both sticks (total of 1 gig) and put second stick in first slot and booted...no problem. So computer is running rather slow on 500Meg ram. Jim :D:D:D

Not sure about your mobo, but the beeps do give a clue as to what the problem is. Tell us - what is the beep sequence?

Hint: Computer POST and beep codes (http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm)
