hey guys i need your help
my young fellow has taken a liken to my 130 TD5
he went away with a few of his mates over the Chrissy break only to return with the TD5 missing
the engine still has plenty of power and no real increase in black smoke
but there's definately a miss in it........
any ideas of where to check first
if i could get my nanocom to work,it would certainly help;)

First place to start would be oil at the red plug on the ECU

Front on the motor left of the head and down a bit, bunch of wires and a black plug ( not big). This is the loom coming from the injectors. Unplug and clean with electrical cleaner crc dry and give it ago, if this is the problem you need a new loom.
the injector loom runs under the rocker cover, over time it may get oil in it which slowly works its way to the plug, you can keep cleaning it but its always a hassle change it I think its only about 125 bucks

Getting the codes read would be the easiest start.
Oil in the injector loom / red plug at the ecu is pretty much the default check, but if there isnt any oil there, dont totally rule the injector harness out.
I sorted one on a car where the 8month old replacement loom had a faulty crimp on the plug for injector 5 last week, and its not the first one I have seen either for that matter.
Wobbling the wire in the connector sorted it so a new loom was fitted again!
The miss was horrible tho... really really noticeable and well down on power.
Cheers

Check the codes! Did he flat the battery at some point during the trip? That may have set the ECU in limp-mode. Sounds like it from your description.

bottom row of the red plug was full of oil :(
just had the ecu replaced about 8months ago from to much oil draining into it ..............
cleaned both plugs of oil and the miss is still there

What Pete meant was get the errors from the ECU which will allude to the problem at hand.
That said I think you have found your problem with the oil the codes will likely relate to injector errors.
I would get some contact cleaner and go to work both at the head end and also at the red plug.
Remove the ECU and turn it upside down and spray liberally with contact cleaner.
If you think there is excessive oil in the ECU itself then take the top off and carefully clean with contact cleaner (dont spray on the board and remove the protective coating)
It will take time to get all the oil out as it will be in the loom from the head to the ECU
Some have sealed it to a funnel and attempted to run cleaner through the loom not sure about that but you could try

It might be worthwhile getting the fault codes cleared, if not done already. Otherwise your truck may assume it still has to run in limp mode.

ECU was clean inside

now this morning was the first time i've had it to drive whilst the motor is cold.........it didn't seem to miss when it first started, then as it warms up its back again :censored:

replace the injector loom inside the head, clean the loom, clean the connectors.
just cleaning the ECU and the connectors is almost useless without the other steps.

Dave is right I assumed based on post no 6 that this was all done 8 Months ago,
Maybe my assumption was amiss

I have had to do 2 patch jobs in the bush on TD5s and to be honest it peeves me of.
1 that the owner’s didn’t know much about their vehicles so why have they left the Coles car park
2 its the most well known td5 issue, like there’s 30 million posts on the topic.
3 they don’t have the gear to fix, patch or replace.
4 and when some one is asking the Halo/angry bird’s bunch spin the poor guy a red herring.
How do I know so much, since I drive an Isuzu, I read altro.

Hi Ray,
Have you plugged your nanocom in yet and read the fault codes?
When you replaced the injector loom did you check for any more oil making its way into the red ecu plug? This will probably need cleaning a few times.
There is no point just making wild guesses here if you can either read the fault codes or get someone to read them for you.
Rgds
