Does anyone have a recommendation for restoring the itunes library from an ipod classic. I've seen free software on the web for doing it but would prefer a recommended one if possible.

I had the same issue, and I used Music Rescue. It worked in as much as my iTunes library was restored, but the free version was a little laborious.

Sharepod.
It was the de facto music recovery tool for iPods when they first came out, and although development has been discontinued, it's still a great piece of software for pulling music back off your iPod. Have used it on dozens of devices, wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

Thanks everyone, That gives me plenty of options for restoration. I've still got a lot of the original files in audacity, but I was looking for a slicker method. The audacity files are those I've recorded from 12" vinyl.
