ipad mini fits nicely on dash

I have been eagerly awaiting a smaller version of the IPAD so that I can fill the void where the OEM sat nav is on the disco. I can now run it basically as a multimedia device without any major alterations which I am very happy about.
Due to the GPS burning up the battery life on the IPAD mini, I removed the console to put a piggy back spade fitting on one of the 12v cigarette plugs in the dash and have tightly fitted another hidden 12 volt plug behind the the AC controller and run a charging cable up through the vent so no holes were needed to be drilled. I have also used a bit of elastic to hold the IPAD mini in place if it becomes too rough however it hardly moves where it is any ways.
Due to not having bluetooth I purchased from Ebay a bluetooth to aux jack which is neatly wired under center console to the aux jack so when needed can run sound from the Ipad mini through the car speakers which is good for movies, listening to GPS person(TOM TOM) or music.
People are probably aware but I will put it out there that if wanting to use an IPAD/ IPAD mini for offroad GPSing or TOM TOM, you require a 3G version due to them only fitted with an intergrated/internal GPS. you can buy an external(plug in) GPS for a wifi only version however to do what I wanted it would not fit. You also dont require a SIM card for the 3G so if you wanted you can just network share with your phone and have internet on the go.

Nice fitout and you will have a heap of function with the mini.
Are you removing it when you are leaving the car as I'd be concerned that a ipad mini would be a prime theft target for kids. The apple gear can also be a bit sensitive to heat. I've had ipods shutdown when left in a locked car due to overheating so possibly something to watch out for as well.

Due to its size its easy to stow and all I have to do is lift it off the elastic cord and no ones the wiser. Is hard to hide the charging cable however a small price I will live with. I used to run a separate tom tom and accessories however all the cable hanging down from the front was a bit of an eye sore. Thats even why I run the under steering column UHF as well and unclip the handset when not in use.

Yes I have just been travelling with my ipad on the dash mount in western NSW and QLD in high 30's and 40 deg heat, it ran fine when travelling with the aircon on, but if you stop for even a short while with the iPad sitting in the sun when you get back it has a temperature warning on it and it shuts down.

nice set up, I use the iPad 3 and iPad mini as seen below.

How I use it really depends what type of driving I do. If I'm touring I'm often using HEMA in the bigger scale on the big iPad to give me an overall view of my direction and really zoom in on the small iPad for what is directly in front of me. When off-road I use the mud map topo on the small iPad and the Hema maps on the big iPad. I also usually carry the kid's ipad as a 3rd back up as it also has all map software on it in case both other iPad's fail.
