Hi all,
After 7 years with a D2 TD5 it is time to upgrade. I am thinking petrol this time, but am not hugely concerned.
I am looking to purchase a petrol D3 V6 or V8. The official figures show the V6 does 15.2L/100 and the V8 15.0L/100. Are these figures about right or are they light on. My old D1 V8 was a shocker for fuel, hence the concern.
Any real world figures would be good. I commute for 30 min each day in medium traffic.
Thanks
Tim

About right for the V6. Depends where you do most of your driving. Long flat country K's and it is a bit lower, mostly city and stop start probably a bit higher. Tyres and accessories etc, also make a difference.

Not around town you won't.
I had a D3 V6 for 4.5 years and 100,000 kms. Out on the hwy with no roof rack or bars it would do 10 to 11L/100. Around town I used to get 16s but I know people who have struggled to get below 20. Economy on sand was high 20s.
It's all about how you drive and I had to retrain myself (previous car was a Subaru Liberty) to get 16s. Gentle acceleration and foot off the gas at every opportunity.

Personally I would go for the V8, drive both and you will see why before you even get out of the street and its not all about power either. As for fuel the V8 can in many cases be better than the V6.
cheers,
Terry

I wouldnt mind a V8 again - cant beat the lazy power. The engine sizes are not that different either, so it should be similiar fuel economy. I just wanted to find out real world opinions.

Coming from 7 years of a diesel, i am not a fast driver anymore - i am used to the slow steady takeoff. Also looking forward to having a bit more go on the highway.

My wife has a 2005 Discovery 3 V8. Around Canberra urban areas we get around 16-17 litres/100km. However on the open road we can get fuel consumption down to 10.5 litres/100km, though it will depend on the conditions. These values are obtained using 98 octane petrol.
By the way, the 4.4 litre V8 is one heck of a nice motor...:BigThumb:

I have a 07 D3 V6 petrol 140,000 kms on the clock, i use 98 Ron most of the time. I drive around the suburbs mainly and get into Melbourne once a week for business and get around 14l per hundred kms on Cooper AT3's. Just got back from Melbourne to Canberra trip with a large roof pod and sitting on 112-114 kph most of the way up and half of the way back with my family of six on board and averaged 13l per 100 hundred kms.
Came back via the Black Spur and still enjoyed driving the D3 through even with the full load and the very heavy roof pod on the roof racks which are never removed!
Good luck with your choice.

Keep in mind that the carputer reads between 1 & 2 L/100 low.

Hi Guys,
I have a D3 V8 HSE.
To work and back (About 130Kms /day) i average 12-13l/100, in mixed traffic conditions. On a longer trip i can get down to mid 11's.
The 4.4l is a great engine, very smooth and has a surprising amount of take off when needed. :D
Cheers
Ben

D3 v8 hse here also - gets 16 in short stop start trips; 13 or so on longer trips in traffic; under 11 at continuous crushing at 100ish and ... 20+ when used in anger in harsh offroad. Smooth, quiet, sonorous and powerful engine.

The wife gets 18+ in the V6 but she is very heavy footed and that is mainly the school run so not very far either.
When I drive it I still accelerate quite hard as my daily is a turbo subaru, however i get closer to 13's when I drive in the city but I drive in sports mode (not manually changing) as the auto tries to get up to high to soon and the engine will be out of it's sweet spot too quickly.
On country trips easily get 10-11 on the open road (cruise around 125km/hr) as an average and 12-13 with the camper trailer on the back.
Sand and offroad - well definitely 20+
We run 20 inch rims and tyres around the city so they are a bit wider than standard and run 18 inch with AT General Grabbers on trips

Did 640km today. Melb to Tathra which is about 75% flat highway and 25% low hills. Got 13.8l/100 towing a 7x5 trailer, 5 in the car and also mine has a bulbar and winch so I'm happy with that.
Regardless of v6,v8 or diesel...a very comfortable trip.
