Hi.I just moved from Austria to Melbourne and I have left my Defender 110 TD5 2005 at home. What I woud like to know is if anyone has had any experience in converting the steering. What woud be the cost involved and who is doing that kind of work? I bought it new in 2005 and spend a lot of time modifying it. We are thinking to send a container at the end of the year to Melbourne so I have enough time to think about it. The way the car is built, it can't be so hard:)
Thanks

You'd pretty much have to sacrifice another defender to do it i recon, but if you found a RHD wreck somewhere that had all the bits you needed... i recon it'd almost be worth it!

Hi, your main issue is confirming that the chassis of your Landy has the necessary mounting points for the RHD steering box. If it has then with the correct steering box, steering link and hoses then converting the steering is not so hard.

Wiring is best done through a new RHD wiring loom, but can be cut and resoldered to suit but may give reliability problems.

Dash swap should be relatively easy with most buts swapping over. There are some filler panels ant the like that you will need but a RHD parts manual should identify those.

If you cannot do some of the above yourself then the labour cost may well be prohibitive. When you add up the cost of shipping, new parts and labour it may well be easier to keep the add on bits from your vehicle, ship them over only, sell the car and by a good replacement here. Best of luck.

The few parts you would need are readily available off donor vehicles. The main ones being the LH and RH swivel housings and RHD steering box. The steering column etc merely swap sides, the centre console stays where it is.

If you do bring it out I would be happy to buy your RH swivel housing to do a disk brake conversion on a series vehicle.
