I have just changed the front wheel bearings on my TD5 Defender, replacing the single lock nut with the two nut set up.Noticed that the drive flange had taken a gouging from something coming loose/breaking up at some stage....the single lock nut had been 'torqued' with a cold chisel, but nothing was floating around between the bearings and the flange. What could have caused this gouging?

sheared drive spline or previously failed wheel bearing shrapnel

Dave.
Guess it could have been a disastrously failed wheel bearing or maybe over judicious use of the throttle with the maxidrive engaged, snapping the shaft.
Pretty brutal stuff, but not unexpected looking at the rest of the vehicle....its had a hard/neglected life.
