View Full Version : Traction Control too slow to engage

Hi All,
How quick should Traction Control engage?
This is my Disco 2, Td5, Auto, CDL, 2000:
Tiffany's first 4wd action.MTS - YouTube
The person giving instructions did not relies the Disco had traction control, so his instructions when to stop came just as the traction control was about/or just engaging. But I still believe that the traction control seems to slow - in my opinion.
Any help, advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

From what i have seen of tc it was working ok just have to keep the revs a bit longer . we :)did that track a couple of weeks ago not bad for a first go

TC seems to be working as designed; now that the guy who is telling you to stop understands that there is TC involved, I'm sure he will change his advice and let the vehicle progress...

TC seems to be working but she backed off every time it was just kicking in, I'm still getting used to to it myself, it's an odd feeling waiting for it too kick in...

Traction control is fine. Disable spectators though.

I had to turn the sound off - too distracting - if you are going to get someone to guide you fine but use one person not 10.
The traction control was cutting in quite quickly but each time it activated you stopped for some reason - if you had kept on the power (not revving the guts out of it) you would have just driven up with TC doing its thing.
Good learning experience though.

I presume the CDL was engaged?
Love those tyres!

did you turn the uhf off so as not to have to listen to that guy? :p
tc working fine, would expect with bigger tyres it would affect the system to a degree, how much i have nfi. :)
where was that?.

Just keep a steady, even pressure on the accelerator and let the T/C do its job.
The T/C works of the ABS, it senses that you have your foot down so you obviously want to go somewhere but the spinning wheel is stopping you so the T/C applies the brake to that spinning wheel to force drive to the wheels with grip. On and off with the accelerator just confuses the computer.
It's a bit disconcerting at first but once you understand how it works it makes sense.

The ETC brakes wheels spinning faster than the average by a certain percentage - something like 5-10% is the threshold.
In Low Range the tolerance for slip is lower than in high range, so probably closer to 5%.
Changing to larger wheels should make no real difference because increasing the size of the tyres just lowers the average speed of the wheels.

Hi All,
It was at Watgan: -33° 3'15.84"S,51°19'30.46"E
Even thought everyone was yelling; there was only 2 guys. One at the top of the hill on the UHF (who didn't know about the TC) and one beside the Disco pretty much giving her positive, calm advice.
The Disco was in low, CDL engaged.
I must remember to lower the revs and wait for it to engage. My fault.
I hope I answered all.
Cheers.

Mate increase revs and hold them increased. Just experiment but the very split second you back off the throttle the etc stops its hard braking momentarily and you can roll back.

There is a short discussion of the ETC at 1m14s which essentially boils down to "keep the power on".

I tried to upload a short video, I failed. I have had differing result even when keeping the power on (at a reasonable level). But the whole TC thing works so much better with a CDL.

It's only as good as the health of the braking system matey. Any abs faults logged? Good clean fluid, good rotors and pad combination?
Cheers

The ONLY way to embed video on AULRO is to copy and paste the URL of the video page. Using the embed option doesn't work, nor does the "shorted" version using youtu.be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5XU7S050kU
Use the "watch" links as above and it will "just work".

that was a very good video showing the ability of t/c, but notice throughout the constant rev's. :)

Yep that's a good one. It's typical of poor conditions in the UK. I recall a motoring writer saying when the D2 first came out that he was astonished that his test can, with him driving, climbed a clay bank out of a river non ht tyres that his defender 90 with mud terrains couldn't do- a place he was very familiar with.

Yes, I did notice the constant revs. He's definitely not gunning it either - don't know what that level of V8 noise equates to but it can't be much more than 1500-2000rpm.

Hi,
The videos are great.
I don't really know what the names are (that's why we always get lost), but I have some screen dumps of the trip on my web page: Watagan 2013-01-11 (http://members.iinet.net.au/~zippo.paris/moto/journey/2013/watagan-2013-01-11/pages/watagan-2013-01-11.html)
If it helps, I also have the OziExplorer track file if you need it. I usually put it on my web page. I've just ran out of time.
Cheers
