Hi All
Need some help here. Seriously considering getting a rear locker for my p38, need some advice on what's good, what's not & what to look out for. And who would be the best installer/supplier.
I would prefer an e-locker over air, but convince me otherwise if I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Also considering adding a front LSD for a little added extra traction, as I don't feel comfortable with having locker on the front axel.
PS. Hope you all had a good festive season.
Cheers

Front LSD would make the steering nice and heavy and scrub your front tyres!
I run an Ashcroft rear air locker in mine. It has 3x the engagement strength of the ARB locker and costs about 2/3 of the price. It has transformed the Rangie into a tank!
If I didn't have traction control on the front axle as well I'd still not run a locker up front, the rear is sufficient. My P38 only ever sees 4wding and camping, so I've put my locker through its paces! Highly recommended.

Who supplies the Ashcroft locker?

I am just about ready to buy a rear locker too RedAndy, if freight can be improved with two. Not sure about installation though, however I am just silly enough to attempt it myself.

Who supplies the Ashcroft locker?
Locally Les Richmond Automotive used to supply them, but I haven't checked lately.
Best pricing is direct from Ashcroft themselves in the UK.

Not if you buy a Detroit Tru Trac or a Quaife. They have minimal effect on steering except to make the car a little harder to turn from straight ahead.
Mine is in an RRC and it makes the steering just not quite as "nice" as it usually is, and that is amplified if you have wear in the steering box,as after a new box, my Quaife is quite transparent.
If you didn't drive with or without side by side you would be hard pressed to know.

I wouldn't be confident enough to install the locker myself, would prefer a supplier & fitter to do it. Though if the Aschcroft locker is available for order, then could get one in and have my mechanic install it for me.

I fitted mine with a mate. Having never even opened a diff up before. The important things are backlash (feel it before you disassemble your old diff centre) and drilling the hole for the air line.
The Ashcroft locker landed at my door for a grand. Try www.ashcroft-transmission.co.uk

What sort of price are we talking about for the Ashcroft?
and Keithy was the procedure to install straight forward or not. I have not gone near a diff previously and share the reluctance of others if its tricky.
Does it come with its own compressor or does it hook up to the EAS compressor? Was thinking about the Air Locker for the future but am tempted to go for an early install.

From my limited experience with lockers I can only comment on my ARB type. It was fitted with a mate and was not that hard as he had a dial gauge for the backlash.
When it worked it was great but in the last two weeks its been leaking air into the axle. I have had it out to inspect and all looked ok and sealed up on the bench. Pressure tested fine. Back in the car 3 days on and it leaks again. Other worry was it somehow pushed a litre of diff oil up the air pipe and through the compressor solenoid.
If you start searching for answers Via google this seems to be quite common through various makes of vehicle and no one has a definitive reason.
I am not complaining as the whole set up was $500 but I dont think I would ever buy this type again.

Yeah see I've heard of quiet a few incidents of similar cases of air leaks, hence the reason why I'm a little reluctant to go air locker, as e-lockers are less prone to these issues, though I'm still yet to find a locker company that makes e-lockers for P38.

Hi redandy, have a look at the following link for KAM electric difflocks that are made for the P38.

Now we seemed to be getting somewhere.
KAM seems to have what I'm looking for with the added feature of LSD built in. Their not cheap though.

Peter, yeah it's pretty straight forward. As long as you have a reasonable tool kit and someone on hand to set the backlash or show you how, you can't go wrong!
You'll need sealant for the mating faces of the diff and new oil as your consumables, and a copy of rave to guide you along. I also took the opportunity to replace my outer axel seals while I had them out.
I'd highly recommend a hoist too.

Those maybe the ones we use on our truck. I had them on our D2 project and was happy with them for the most part

Hi all, just an update. After carefull consideration, I'm leaning back towards the Ashcroft locker based on my mechanics advice. Though I like the KAMS, the install process is apparently more complex, with the Ashcroft being more simpler set up, though being air operated, it seems more robust than ARB's version.
I take there's no other locker system out there that I should know about?

There is also the TJM Prolocker (based on the McNamara design) - but I am not sure if it is available for the P38 diff.

Yeah spoke to someone about it tonight, but he wasn't sure wether they are suitable for P38's, as they're more so made for the defenders & D1 & D2's.
I don't know how good they are either;)

Whoever you spoke to was smoking some good stuff. They have been made for a big range of vehicles, not just landies. If they don't make a P38 version then they probably will soon.
IMHO the McNamara (Prolocker) design is the best (technically). On top of that I don't know anyone who has ever had a problem with one.

Ashcroft have never had one returned full stop. They use the same lockers we get on their comp trucks too with zero breakages to date.
Even for the simple fact they don't leak air like the others, that's where my money is!
Mine has had plenty of use in the 2yrs I've had it fitted, engages very quickly!

That was the first thing I told Dave Ashcroft after installing our first Locker.
They were used and abused in our D90 with out any issues.

Neither do MDE of McNamara/Prolocker designs. The ARB is the only locker with a reputation for air leaks.

I have a mate with a pro locker that leaks. Hates axle seals like the plague!

That's exactly what my mechanic said. He has a modified D2 with 2 Ashcroft lockers and swears by them. Though he reckons I'd be the only P38 in Vic to have a locker installed, now please tell me that's no true .....:o
I did have a closer look at the TJMs, and are certainly cheaper, but I must say that I'm not a huge fan of their customer service after a recent encounter.
