V8 2001 Disco 2 153k km. Purchased nearly a year ago. We do a measly 10k a year.

We had to weld a crack in catalytic converter, then the engine blew up on us (apparently blocked oil pick up - had a piece of rubber in it) and we replaced that with a refurb'd one, the battery died (fair enough - it was 5 yrs old), then I had the top hose valve leak issue and had to replace hoses, now I'm replacing the alternator. The cruise control never worked, the horn fuse keeps blowing (we've been through 3 so far) and recently the elec sunroof has stopped working. :)

I have to decide a cut off point for throwing $$ at it. My take is the engine was an unlucky anomaly and the rest is reasonable wear & tear on a 153k disco but would be grateful for other opinions.

Any practical steps I could be taking now to mitigate against future costs? Should I bring forward the 160k service, say?

Thoughts gratefully rec'd.

Dave

I don't know what level of mechanical experience you have or how long you've been working with Land Rovers but my advice would be to take your Disco to a reputable Land Rover specialist and ask them to go over everything with a fine toothed comb. They'll be able to spot things that need fixing and replacing before they go wrong.

It might sting the pocket now in one big hit but it is less frustrating than chasing, finding and fixing faults as they happen.

The cruise control never worked ...

The cruise control problem on these vehicles is often a simply a leaky vacuum hose.

The small rubber hose (about a thick as a pencil) to the the actuator (near the brake fluid container) is affected by heat, degrades over time and leaks. Disconnect it at the actuator (from memory its just a push on / pull off fit), cut off a couple of cm and push it back on. You might now have a working cruise control.

Why wasn't the engine turned off as soon as the oil pressure light came on. May not have saved the engine but depending on the circumstances may have.?
