Can anyone tell me what code P1605 Eprom Error Set ( transmission) means? Also trying to rectify an excessive fuel use problem on 2001 V6. You can smell excessive fuel in the exhaust. Last Tank it took 38 litres to cover 128km. Has anyone got any clues where to start. Is the engine control unit faulty? Car has recently been serviced but it did not help. Also any advise where replacement timing belt kit can be sourced at a reasonable price? Thanks.

Does the unit say that the error is in the transmission?
An EPROM is a programmable chip, I would find it difficult to believe there is one in the transmission, but there may be one for the transmission. At any rate, it is possible the two are related, and the excessive fuel use is a symptom of this faulty "chip" in your car. Coming from someone who knows little of car electrics. For what it is worth I thought I'd mention it.

clear the fault in auto ECU. If it returns reprogram the auto ECU. if still returns it will require a ECU.
With fuel consumption need to see it any faults are logged in engine ECU

Your truck is an early model so far as Flandies go.
The transmission went through a number of serious modifications until 2004 when a reprogrammed ECM was specified together with transmission internal mods. It sits next to the engine ECM in the battery box area.
The biggest problem was porous pistons in the Jatco transmission and that was part of a campaign change here in the USA.
The service issues are engine/power pack grounds (earths) and communication down the two control cables which can be found near the radiator where the break sockets are held in round clip on clamps. If you scroll down this forum you can find a diagram of the pin outs posted by a fellow ALRU contributor.
Check the Ohm ratings of the solenoids since these are prone to early failure and will give erroneous codes such as you have posted. In any case a good clear out of codes with a decent scanner might just fix it, I use an Autologic LR scanner.
As to timing belts don't skim on the need to change the water pump, tensioner, idler, idler roller and of course the belts.
You will need a timing tool kit to hold the cams which is not easy to come by plus 4 or 6 timing sprocket holding bolts for the cam wheels. Must be changed during belt replacement.
You can make your own timing tool kit if you have a welder and a die grinder, I can give you instructions on how to make it if you are serious.
I always change the thermostat and tubing for customers when I do this job plus a new coolant header tank and cap--it was modified here to prevent coolant blow over on hot days.
In any case in closing this timing belt job if done carelessly can result in seriously blown engine, so care an knowledge is needed to do it successfully.
Cheers Dennis

Thanks for the comments on my Freelander problems. I have all of the parts to do the timing belt change and had a service man ready to do the job. He has now got scared as he has not the correct tools. If zedcars could provide me with some instructions how to make a tool set that would be fantastic. There may be some hope to get the car going again otherwise it is the scrap heap.
