It looks new - never been fitted so just a spare.

do you think it could have just fallen off or perhaps from something else or somebody else's car? seems a bit weird that a spare could fall off onto the floor?

Dont Drive it that is the clip that holds your fluxcapasitator in
There is no wear marks so like Graeme said spare/left over

looks almost the right size to be a UJ clip.
Check them all.

the flexable joints in a propshaft have Univeral Joints on them (UJ's) each UJ has 4 circlips in it holding it in place, If you have on that has not been inserted correctly when they come out they a usually unmarked.
ON the few circlips I have seen incorrectly installed and not home in its groove most of them are of the type of circlip that you have there, It usually happens because of the length of the pins on the pliers used to insert them.

Thanks Dave
So would it still be ok to drive? am thinking it would be a 5 min job at an LR specialist? can you get by with only 3 clips? i assume if its in a housing it would still look pretty newish?

no, its bloody dangerous to drive with it missing...
usually when the clip comes out because it wasnt installed properly its because the UJ bearing cup has given it a little nudge if thats happened you are running the risk of having a propshaft related event that would probably wind up in the book starting with the phrase
"well it was entertaining buut"

Was it on the floor at the back or front of car?
Got a tourch ? if it was the back you can check these if its the front you will have to remove bash plate to see/feel
Blknight is right it would not be a good idea to drive, if it is a uni clip
What dia. is it because its about 250mm on my screen?

Looking at the parts diagrams for the D3, it appears there's only UJs and circlips on the rear driveshaft:

That might round down the places to search for you.

its 2.5 inches and it was found at the front of the vehicle or where it was parked at least. was driver side near front wheel. but the car wasnt there at the time as i noticed it on the floor. so it could be rear driveshaft clip?

2.5 inches is to big to be a UJ cir clip i would think,2.5 cm and it could be one.
If it was one,you would be dam lucky to find it at home in the garage.

Has any work been done on the vehicle in reent times?

Graeme
the only work done recently was a full trans flush and steel pan (i presume). other than that there was some brake light work. is it too big to be a UJ clip?

thats 2.5 inches diameter not length!! but seriously, do you think it could be drive shaft or steering related BlkKnight?

a full trans flush and steel panI've not seen the kit so I wonder if the filter is retained with such a clip and this one went flying during fitment requiring another to be obtained. You could ask where the work was done if they recognise the clip.

it was done at graeme cooper - i trust the guys there as we have been there for a while now. was going to take it back to them as they seem to know their stuff. trouble is do i drive it there and risk any damage or get it towed there and get them to check it out...

Its far too big for a uni joint circlip from your vehicle. If its from the gearbox filter then its internal and can't fall out so either one hasn't been fitted or its a duplicate. I would keep driving but ring the workshop to discuss a possible source.

think i solved it - went under the house (where the garage is) and found another clip and some o rings and rubber washers. we had a pest guy spray under the house and he may have kicked it onto the garage floor. seems to suggest that previous owners did some diy work, as there are a large number of nails, screws, odds and sods under the house. the other clip is larger and rusted but i guess the smaller one could have been under the house for a long time without rusting. are these circlips used for domestic work as well as cars?
below is a pic with all the other bits i found:
